    Default 35W Bridge Collapse

wcco.com - I-35W Bridge Collapse Into Mississippi River

That's going to mess traffic up for a while...as if road construction wasn't enough of a mess around here.

    That's horrific.

I drove a long way home this evening and chose to take 94West all the way instead of going up through 35W and over. I missed it by about an hour and a quarter of a mile.

^Wait, are you two from MN? So am I! What's crazy is that one of my friends was over that bridge 10 minutes before it collapsed into the river.

Ah, bridge disasters are so cool!

Just imagine all the technology that would go into making a movie about bridge disasters! Miniatures, CGI, pyrotechnics!

And now for a little song:

    London Bridge is falling down
    Falling down, falling down
    London Bridge is falling down
[I will not state the last line because it makes no sense]

Uberfuhrer gets the prize for the most unexpected, original response. (maybe he got hit on the head? maybe he's still in shock?)

It would be better if the injuries and deaths were pretend, that's for sure.
“There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.”

Well, I didn't experience it, so as far as I'm concerned, the injuries and deaths are about as real as a video game for me.

I am reminded of what businesses say to their customers: "I sympathize with your loss." What they mean is, "I don't really sympathize with your loss but I'm just pretending to so you don't sue me." And then they send a fruit basket.

It's the same deal here. I can't really sympathize because it isn't happening to me. When you say you do sympathize with things like that, you're just making yourself seem more phony. Not trying to shake things up or anything, but just stating the truth.

I only care about it in an abstract way unless I observe it (empathy is a normal human thing that is frequently observed even in infants, actually, some animals even show signs of it) or if someone I care about is hurt. If that is phony, I can live with that. I knew Toonia lives near there and is sometimes in the city, so I felt concern about her. I couldn't remember who else was around there, though.
