It seems to me that we can't start plucking kids from homes at young ages because some deparment deems their names a little too wacky.

How do we decide what names are bad?

How do we know how good the parents are based on the names they give?

How much damage is this all likely to do to the child, as compared to the damage supposedly done by his/her name?

It's such an idiotic backfire move. If ANYTHING comes out of this, it will be more acceptance of neo-nazis and the like.

I can see the case in New Zealand.. but Adolph Hitler is a harder name altogether.. I don't at all agree with the parents, or their nazi ways, but my beliefs allow them to name their kids this -- It'd be like telling Christians they can't name their children Jesus or Muslim children cannot be named Alaa. If you're a Nazi, it'd be a natural to name your child the greatest Nazi of all of them.

But Talulla does the hula from hawaii?.. Wtf? ..

You bring up a valid point.

What criteria determines the inherent "damage" a name inspires?

What about Pol Pot? Josef Stalin? Robert Mugabe? Slobodan Milosevic? Are we primarily worried about names that might evoke historical cruelty?

What about Lucifer? Damien? Mephistopheles? Mammon? Satan? Are we primarily worried about names that could elicit a moral/theistic panic?

I heard that in Germany it's illegal to give a kid the name Judas.

I'm sure there's more to this than we know about.

New Jersey officials said Wednesday that it is not just a matter of names. "DYFS would never remove a child simply based on that child's name," Bernyk said.

That's what the German people said, when they heard about the concentration camps.

I dunno.. Names hold a LOT of meaning to me. It'd be unthinkable, or the ultimate act of betrayal to my kid, to name them something that might ever be a factor in hurting them or causing anything more than a casual conversation about.

And not to relate religion to Naziness up there, but.. If your beliefs and love are with Christianity, it'd be natural to name a kid something to tribute to it.
