Two striking things about Jefferson, he frequently let others, like Madison (INTP), present his ideas and do his fighting for him. He generally shrank from confrontations except when his highest ideals where challenged or outraged. When this happened he had a fierce vindictive streak. Sounds INTP?

Jefferson was an idealist. Look at the studies of his life and his writings.

    Madison was the INTP.

    Jefferson is often described as:

    Never blunt or assertive
    Almost always appealingly gracious
Always bearing a slight ambiguousness about his positions
    abhorred dispute
    polite, soft spoken, diplomatic
    Very little sense of humor
    "sparkled" in private conversation

Jefferson seems more like a 5. He was really into scholarly studies and investigation, self-sacrifice...eh not so much. He bankrupted himself on fine wines and fine art seeking to lose himself in a private world of symmetry and harmony. Extremely private about his personal emotions.

For all he claimed to dislike slavery, he couldn't forestall his own spending habits and remained desperately tied to the income generated by his own slaves. He had a high capacity for holding ambigious positions. Does this seem 9-like?

I'm an INFJ, and I really really identify with Jefferson ... I just wonder if he was a P rather than J, Ps seem more serene than Js ...

An interesting perspective on Jefferson from someone in his own time, author Margaret Bayard Smith.

EDIT Link doesn't work right: If you want to read it probably can pull it up easily by going to google.com/books and type: "Thomas Jefferson: A Chronology of His Thoughts? - Page 164" into their search box.
