    Default Israel: Progressive Homosexuality Laws

    • Sodomy: The State of Israel inherited its sodomy or "buggery" law from British influence, but there is no record that it was ever enforced against homosexual acts that took place between consenting adults in private. The ban on consensual same-sex sexual acts was formally repealed by the national legislative assembly Knesset in 1988.

    • Army: Unlike many other democratic nations, the armed forces of Israel allow service without any distinction based on sexual orientation. Since 1993, homosexuals have been allowed to openly serve in the military, including special units.

    • Marriage: Religious marriage is the only current legally recognized union that's performed on Israeli soil. Heterosexual Jews alone, can get married. They are also the only people allowed to get a divorce. So, even heterosexuals of a non-Jewish religion or of non-faith altogether, are unable to legally marry.

    • Israeli law recognizes same-sex marriages performed elsewhere. Homosexuals can marry abroad and when they go back to Israel to register, it would be accepted as legal and equal standing. On January 29, 2007, following a Supreme Court ruling ordering them to do so, Jerusalem registered its first gay couple, Avi and Binyamin Rose.

    • Partnership Laws: The State of Israel allows foreign partners of its homosexual citizenry to receive residency permits. The Civil Service Commission extends spousal benefits and pensions to the partners of homosexual employees. The Israeli State Attorney's Office has extended the spousal exemption from property-transfer taxes to same-sex couples. Israel's attorney general has granted legal recognition to same-sex couples in financial and other business matters.

    • The city of Tel Aviv recognizes unmarried couples, including gays and lesbians, as family units and grants them discounts for municipal services. Under the bylaw, unmarried couples qualify for the same discounts on day care and the use of swimming pools, sports facilities, and other city-sponsored activities that married couples enjoy.

    • Adoption: On January 10, 2005, the Supreme Court ruled that a lesbian couple is able to legally adopt each other's children. Before that, gay partners of parents were granted legal guardianship over their partner's children.

    • Feb. 10, 2008 - The attorney general of Israel ruled on Sunday that gay couples will be allowed to jointly adopt children that are not biologically linked to either partner. Menachem Mazuz ruled that there was no legal basis for differing treatment of gay couples to straight couples. Until now, the government has not allowed gay couples to adopt children through the Welfare and Social Services Ministry’s Child Welfare Service unless a child was one of the partners’ biological offspring.

    • Gay Rights Advocacy: Dec. 21, 2008- Israel and Arab states are at odds with each other over the first UN gay rights declaration. Israel has joined a group of United Nations member states calling for the institution's first gay rights declaration, an initiative which met with resistance by Arab-backed opposition. The declaration that was presented at the UN General Assembly calls for decriminalization of homosexuality. "This is the first time in history that a group of UN member countries voices its objection to discrimination that is based on sexual identity and orientation," said Dutch foreign minister, Maxime Verhagen. "The issue is no longer taboo," he added.

I think it's also important to keep in mind, Israel hasn't been a country very long. So, the advancements on this particular subject, most likely places them as the most progressive country of all time.

Long way to go? Homosexuals in Israel have every single civil right any human being could ask for. Israel also advocates for the ending of gay discrimination in the entire middle east.

As for the parade, they were legally allowed to do that. Just because some parts of society have never experienced a gay pride parade and disapprove, is another matter altogether.

Also, the bulk of opposition to the parades are usually from the Muslim and orthodox sects of Judaism. Israel is surrounded by countries that kill and torture those that are gay. Of course, Arabs and Muslims made a stink about it.

This is what happens to gays in Gaza:

In the New Republic, Yossi Klein Halevi described the treatment of one gay youth: “He was beaten by his family, then warned by his father that he’d strangle (him) if it ever happened again.” Later, “he was arrested ... and forced to stand in sewage water up to his neck, his head covered by a sack filled with feces, and then he was thrown into a dark cell infested with insects and other creatures he could feel but not see.” This is not by any means the worst. Halevi quoted the friend of another victim. “They put him in a pit. It was the fast of Ramadan, and they decided to make him fast the whole month but without any break at night. They denied him food and water until he died in that hole.”
The Jews in Israel that oppose gays belong to the extreme Haredi and Hasidic sects of Orthodox Judaism. They certainly are not the majority by any means.

Hurray! Gays are no longer beaten, covered in shit and left to starve to death! They've obtained the the rights of our pets! Truly something that all in the gay community should strive for.

But serious it's nice to know that people are easing up on them.
