Yeah, I've been scorned by family and friend's families for being too "philosophical" and analytical, and been told very politely to just shut up about things. I always gathered that if I grew up in a European household, such topics would be regular dinner conversations and not something you'd have to keep to yourself.

Probably so, I just always thought it'd be different because there would be more people in my environment who reads the stuff I like on their own free time, and it's not just something obscure kept inside the academic world and forgotten about in day to day life. I know there's religious nuts in Europe, too, but even many of those nuts know the value of going outside of the bible for recreation reading and artistic inspiration

Where did you grow up, if I may ask? Also, I have to add that reading philosophical texts and having discussions about such matters is very much tied up with class issues in Europe. It's not some intellectual paradise for everyone. You get a lot more talk about Madonna and Brangelina and soccer than you do about philosophy, in general.

I grew up in Michigan which in general is pretty liberal and open minded to anything, but my situation with friends and family was almost more bible-belt-like.
