Italians are good at food and art, not war.

On topic, I am all in favour of a very strong America (I mean militarily strong). Someone's got to be the boss and I'd much rather it be them.

I'd rather the U.S. be the example country than the boss country. Why should we need a boss?

There's always a boss. All I'm saying is I prefer the US to anyone else (except us Canadians - we would be good, nice, polite bosses!).

I think Italians wish they could identify more with the Roman empire. I haven't seen anything impressive come out of that part of the world in a while. What are you guys doin over there?

They still make fine cars/food/clothing. They have some of the biggest clowns in government in the world, though.

I need something new though. They used to be a mecca of intellectualism and enlightenment. And now Italy's American ambassadors are... Long Islanders.

Not true. We are simply disconnected from them. There is nothing in common between modern Italy and the Roman Empire. No Italian, if asked what he identifies with, would name the Roman Empire (Mussolini tried to forcibly attach this identity - the results were horrible, as everybody knows).

I haven't seen anything impressive come out of that part of the world in a while. What are you guys doin over there?
I personally don't feel the need to do anything impressive. But anyways, I'm not trying to make it a competition Italy vs the US - I know Italy has some very big problems, esp the government and the southern part of it - but I am also shocked by certain peculiar opinions I see around here.

As far as mecca of intellectualism and enlightment: I do think our universities are pretty good, on average, and that we do quite well at research - although, with the exception of the richest cities of northern italy, most university cannot afford to pay decently our own researchers, which then end up going abroad. This is a problem mostly related to our cartoonish goverment that loves to cut expenses on education and research, for reasons that are largely unknown.

So this thread is for talking about those differences and what way are we different. And topic should cover all aspects of this differences.

To tell you the truth many aspects of American culture do not make much sense. (at least to me)

    Things like:

    Gun culture

So strong impact of religion upon society

    Supporting of totally free market

Denial of almost everything that has something to do with environment

How can someone weight over 250 Ibs? I trully don't understand this one.
Here if you are over 200Ibs you are fat pig unless you are really tall.
But in US there are people over 300,400 or even heavier than that.
I can't believe that a person can't see that they are getting fat and do something about it.
I mean you can't get that much fat over night.

This are just some general chapters and there are many small ones.

Also the other side is free to ask questions back.(that is the whole point)

As for Canadians , Australians or others they are welcome here as well.
Can be summed up this way: American's are afraid of sex and sexual openness but embrace violence. Europeans are unbelievably open to sex but are afraid of even seeing someone get bruised.

long island has little to do with italy. I lived in nj where there is also a large population of italian heritage. However, watching scarface and eating pizza is not representing italy
