    Default When the Republicans rebuild...

What are they going to center their party on?

This culture war stuff makes the party seem down-right idiotic, and bigoted.

Yes, I used the word. The new-PC may make "bigot" more taboo than "homo," but that is just ridiculous.

If they are smart, smaller government post-Obama. If they are not, anti-anything that riles up the ever-dwindling base.

I was just thinking about this. How much of a "Religious Right" will exist in the next generation? Since religion itself seems to be declining...

Which of course leads to "How big will that voting group be?"

I saw a recent article by the National Review saying that, essentially, the Republican Party must shift towards the center (modernize, he called it) in order to maintain political strength. I'll link to it later.

All of these comments assume that the average voter makes a rational decion when choosing who to vote for. Sarah Palin actually has a better chance of getting elected than McCain does, because she's charming and she gets people excited. It doesn't actually matter that McCain is more moderate than she is. The people who vote for reason are overshadowed by those who vote for personality.

I agree, a recent Zogby poll indicates that that a majority of Obama supporters (and likely a majority of McCain supporters, though this wasn't covered) couldn't correctly identify the positions of the Obama/Biden ticket most of the time (and more Obama supporters incorrectly answered questions pertaining to which party currently controls congress than would have been the case if they guessed randomnly). By the same token, Kennedy won the televised debates based on presentation alone, and Gore lost crucial votes through his body language and demeanor.

Most longtime voters tend to vote by party, and most of the rest by personality.
