Default How intelligent people end up in a cult

Interesting video on a former cult, including the former guru, produced by the Atlantic. It is well worth watching.

    Intelligence is way overrated.
Take the weakest thing in you
And then beat the bastards with it
And always hold on when you get love
So you can let go when you give it

These aren't intelligent people, IMO. If you need a cult to get you through daily life and cannot think/act for yourself then the problem lies with you, your willpower, and inability to think independently.

This Cohen guy seems like a sociopath.

    Defining intelligence is very difficult.

Anytime I hear - "spiritual awakening", I automatically take a couple steps away from whatever it is that's saying "spiritual awakening". I don't know that it makes me more intelligent, though. I think it makes me more aware, which is what this really comes down to.

Intelligence would be irrelevant. Cults appeal to emotion, provide structure and a sense of belonging for lost individuals.

I read about that megalomaniac's behavior back in 2006 or so. He's bad news.

Only real reason I've heard intelligent people getting into cults is to find like minded people and just dealing with the stupid crap. But that's coming from people who have gotten out.

I agree but why are they lost to begin with? Does having higher intelligence make one more susceptible to being a lost individual, needing structure or even being more emotional or at least recognizing that they have emotional needs that go in this direction?
