But we can! Apparently all you need is:some knowledge of medicine, 7 dead people (this might require a trip to the graveyard) and some electricity to succeed:

    Ok,now seriosly:
Going by your analogy(and accepting the body/soul division):machines need energy in order to work, simple assembly of parts, or fixing a broken part won't make them work,so we can assemble all the body parts, fix what is broken, but the problem is not being able to create the energy to maintain it. Theoretically if we find a way to create (recreate might be a better term) that energy the same way we do with machines we'll be able to bring them back to life.
Yeah I took this in the wrong direction haha. You were asking if not being able to bring back the dead implies we have a soul, I'm answering if can actually do it and even drawing a somewhat positive conclusion:

As soon as a person dies, the body begins breaking down. A broken down car can have a part replaced because that part is going to remain essentially the same. But organs decay and decompose, starting almost immediately. Even if there is no soul, you can't bring a dead person back for the same reason you can't fix a rotten peach.

When someone dies something in that person has left the body whether it indeed a soul or not because like you said the body begins to decompose immediately. What if those parts that began decaying have some way of being preserved could we still have the ability to bring someone back to life?

Break an egg, leave it out for a day and try to get it back together again. If you can't, it doesn't mean that it has a soul. We're very complicated eggs.

First of all, the cause of death itself would have to be addressed. If we could always do that, the more likely result is that no one would die in the first place.

Secondly, after the direct cause of death, the human body breaks down fairly rapidly after it's self maintaining systems are shut off. It's too vast, too complex, too subtle, to be in our technology to address.

It's really kind of an entropy problem. Try putting an egg back together after you break it, or some aerosol spray back into the can.

What is a soul made out of? Would it be possible for us to detect souls?
[Trump's] rhetoric is not an abuse of power. In the same way that it's also not against the law to do a backflip off of the roof of your house onto your concrete driveway. It's just mind-numbingly stupid and, to say the least, counterproductive. - Bush did 9-11

The soul is a delusion of essentialism - that there is a "self" before existence the way there is a "rabbit" before evolution; We merely have a classification of form that entails small mammalian long-eared nose-wrinkling organisms. Each and every 'rabbit' is in constant flux of each other individual, there is no true rabbit.

Natural selection is the origami of nature, the self is a product of nature's origami.

your spirit is your breath. to "aspirate". to "aspire". spirit. same sort of thing.

it's the one definition of spirit that could take on consensus.

if we can't define spirit, there isn't any use talking about it.

i like the definition of spirit being the "act of living". to breathe. to aspire.

but souls are different you see? humans have a spirit, but humans are souls.

without the definitions, conclusions can't be had easily..
