I have a dog. I call her Ayn Rand.
I walk my dog. A new neighbour passes by.
I point to my dog and I say:
Hello and this is Ayn Rand.
    It is called an introduction.

Freshmen courses are about introduction, too. Hello and this is philosophy.
    Introduction is redundant?

Ayn Rand was a bad novelist. Goebbels was another bad novelist.
Both became apologists for a bad cause.
Apologia is not philosophy. It is not science, or art.

Lark wrote a valid post. Read it.

@wildcat, now that I've read it I have to say I agree strongly with Lark for a change.

I agree. How I can make sense when I have to answer his redundant questions?

He said the mention of the name Ayn Rand in my OP was irrelevant! This is about Ayn Rand!

This thread is not about wildcat.
This thread is about Ayn Rand.

    A hiku poem.

Oliver Sacks wrote a book called Awakenings.
    It is about real events.
Catatonic patients were given a drug (lithium) that made them alive again.

One woman had been catatonic since the 20s.
When she awoke, she asked for a cigarette.
She lit the cigarette with a match.
    The match misfired.
    She tried again.
    The match misfired.
    She tried again.
    The match misfired.

    Why the match misfired?
And what it has to do with Ayn Rand?

Björn Wahlroos, a banker and a disciple of Ayn Rand, said:
The only task of the director of a company is to make money for the shareholders.

A director who understands her task right (it is to make maximum profit for the shareholders) is given options. So she can buy yachts etc.
The director summons her factory manager and tells him: I give you two alternatives. You can make good or bad products. If you make good products, I fire you. If you make bad products, I increase your salary.

It is expensive to make good products. It is cheap to make bad products.

What happened to the ex-catatonic woman who could not light her cigarette?
She went back to the catatonic state.
Before she did, she said: I do not want to live in a world where they make bad matches.

Ayn Rand's being a Russian expatriate is irrelevant. And technically, this is about Objectivism, according to the thread title. Yet nobody gets around to discussing the philosophy, instead they engage in ad homs against the founder of Objectivism and then accuse Rand of not doing any real philosophy. Figures.

What philosophy? I do not see any philosophy.

I see a pampered richie-rich lass who resented her mother for having given her dolly to the poor.
The Russians let her study in the university, for free. The state gave her even money to do it!
Ayn Randy is a gift from Russia, by love, to America. Expatrian poison.

The expatriate Hitler left Vienna and came to Munich. The castle of Bavaria, a little monk.
Randy left Russia and came to America.
Crazy ideas travel. They cross borders. Poison spreads.

Objectivism, he he. Didn't you see that the title is irony?

There needs to be a balance between accepting social obligations that might be just slightly inconvenient, and the headache and possible suffering of trying to fight them.

Happiness is good. Having some philosophy based around essentially being not happy until you are entirely happy by all your own rules is inherently self defeating in a most idealistic fashion.

Dealing with a slight unhappiness or even small ethical wrongs can in some cases increase overall net happiness, while having to fight every perceived wrong can actually make you worse off than if you had just left it alone, especially when some of the things are seemingly insurmountable.
