Default If meditation was a norm for everyone from the age of eight

Would it eliminate all violence in the world?

I read this quote from the Dali Lama, my first response is that it could be taught but teaching does not pre-destine anyone to learn or practice, although after a while I actually thought about how meditation featured within martial discipline to make people more efficient fighters and killers so no guarantee of non-violence from that perspective either.

No. Simple case of mixing up cause and effect, I'd have said.

A very extreme statement; no. Meditation just heightens mindfulness, which heightens compassion. This doesn't nullify the conscience or decision making.

You could define prayer as meditation, and lots of violence has been done by people who pray daily.

I have always found that I can think clearly no matter what task I am currently working to accomplish though this may not be the same case for everybody but if it is it follows that we don't need to adopt a formal routine or ritual for thinking or what we might call meditating, as I would think those who can actually meditate should be able to block out all external stimuli from their mind, hence they could theoretically meditate in any time or place.

Yup. Although prayer in Western culture is less meditative, just look at how the Middle Eastern culture prays. It very much resembles meditation. Also, it is compulsory for most everyone to pray this way, including children.

Yet just look at how violent it is over there. Obviously this prayer/meditation does nothing to stop violence.

That would certainly seem to be true.

However, I must say that meditation has to be right minded in order to function. Doing a specific action without right minded is mundane - it ends up being no different than talking to a person or eating breakfast or walking down the street. Prayer can be a meditation if it is right minded, but people can also rattle it off habitually in such a way that it ends up being not meditation.

possibly...but not because of the meditation more because of the type of society we would be if that was something universally valued.
