I sometimes wonder when the next ice age will come. Does anyone else ever think about stuff like this? I wonder what will be the fate of humans when it comes, and more interestingly what the next reigning life form will be if humans don't survive (remember the ill-fated dinosaurs?). I'm fascinated by the mammals that did survive the last ice age! If some of you think that humans and dinosaurs existed together and dinosaurs perished while humans survived, feel free to speculate what you think will happen to humans during the next ice age. :)

I think the Dinosaurs are not quite out of the picture. "Jurassic Park" gave me hope. My prediction 2112 will be the new year of the Dinosaur, mark my prediction.

Also perhaps the human and dinosaur DNA will merge to make a new super-species.

Right now the Earth is experiencing a warm cycle in an ice age. As long as there are glaciers, it's called an ice age by definition. But for now the glaciers have only receded.

I heard a recent prediction that the ice is supposed to begin moving south again in the 2030s. And over the next few years, decreased sunspot activity is supposed to bring a world-wide cooling trend. I don't think any man-made global warming will diminish the Sun's ability to affect the Earth's climate.

spamtar that thing looks hideous. :horor: If your prediction is correct, I hope our genes mix with dinosaurs. I want dinosaur in my blood line!

Yes, I think we're in a warmer phase too and the favorable climate has allowed humans to flourish. It's only been 2 million years that we've been having this warmer phase where humans have thrived, compared to the earth being billions and billions of years old. I also agree with what you said about global warming in that I think the forces of nature are ultimately much stronger than the force of man.

Ice ages are such beautiful phenomenons. They are the sinus rhytm of the planet, the beating heart of all life!

I hate to correct someone after they agreed with me. But the present warming trend began only about 12,000 years ago. Around 2,500,000 years ago in Africa the human race began to evolve due to some kind of catastrophic climate changes. I don't think civilization arose until around 10-12,000 years ago. But before that, humans had shown highly advanced cognitive abilities, despite the fact that they were primarily a nomadic species.

Yup, the last ice age peak was 20000 years ago iirc.

so maybe when the earth cools down and the ice moves south, we'll become nomads again?

Unlikely, we'll just start snow shoveling a lot more, put winter tires on our cars and wear warm clothes all year round.. It's not like the age age will have ice sheets traveling at 100 miles an hour southward, it's a very slow process and we have the technology to deal with that easily. :p

From my point of view.

The humans have disrupted the natural cycles so it is possble that it will pass a few dozen million years before a new ice age. (when it is time for some other great glaciation)

However if that turns out to be the case the human civilization will not exist in so far future. Since evolution will take its tool and change many things about humans or humans will be merged with their technology far before the new ice age comes. Which itself is not a problem since classical ice ages dont cover the entire surface of the Earth, plus technology would help. So by the time the next ice will come it my not matter since the civilization will be spreading around the galaxy or even further.

Well I wonder what will happen in 2012, none event or catastrophic environmental cataclysm as some have predicted.

What makes you think that ? (The prophecies and supernatural stuff aside)

I guess lately I think more about ice ages which I know take a very long time. I don't pay a lot of attention to whatever's being said about 2012. I have no other reason to argue against it however.

actually, i thought the opposite true that our use of fossile fuels is speeding up the ice age cycle?
