That and the energy generated from pointless debate.
Pointless debate can generate energy? It usually has the opposite effect on me.

    Smile Neurosis and Cure

Of course you have trouble respecting me because I take the opposite tack.

So rather than presenting an argument, I engage in conversation, where I presume I am talking to someone with a different point of view.

And frankly I regard argument as a form of literate neurosis, while electronic conversation is the cure.

^ Isn't that also a neurosis, when one thinks every thought is about them?

What is the cure for such paranoia and egocentrism, I wonder?

I'm not sure victor used the first person as a self or generic reference, but in response to your question, I would think that'd be up there among the many factors that cause people to feel threatned and to engage in a defensive stance, for whichever reasons their minds can weave.

    Free speech = vacuous opinions?

Kirkegaard was right, people want freedom of speech because they're not inclined to utilise their freedom of thought.

Seriously, I think it's a potential energy source. It's renewable too.
