Maine, ice storm 1998, no power for two weeks. Wood stove for heat and to cook on if need be but the propane range still worked. This is the reason we had a gas range. As we were living without running water to begin with it was no great struggle to continue to do so - i.e. nothing changed. The biggest "loss" was refrigeration - it was use it up quick or get out the canner.

One winter when I was in High School money was tight enough that my folks couldn't pay the power bill. Again there was wood heat, a propane range, in this case gravity feed water. It was a great lesson in what is possible, what can be done - and that it can be an adventure.

These do not address the OP. To this I will say that technology in all it's aspects is not questioned nearly enough, though there is much that should not be discarded. Wendell Berry has some good thoughts on this, as does Neil Postman.

I had some "without electricity" experiences over this summer when we had quite big storms and our house ended up with no electricity and a bit later on we had only part of the electricity that we needed. That made us make innovative ways to get around things, like when your water pump doesn't work -> how to do normal activities like washing up clothes, dishes, washing yourself etc. Such events makes a person to realize how dependent people are of electricity these days.

That is why solar power, wind mills etc. should be encouraged to use, because that makes people less vulnerable for electricity probelms.

A more decentralized power system is also less vulnerable to disruptions, whether natural or deliberate.

Smile The Book and the Telephone and the Television

To be without electricity means we loose the telephone and gain the book.

And not to be without electricity means we gain the telephone and loose the book.

To be or not to be?

To be with electricity means we gain the noosphere and loose literacy.

To be without electricity means reading a book through the rear vision mirror.

While to be with electricity means watching television through the windscreen.

well if we lose electricity we lose water, we lose the internet, fuel pumps are electric so... no traffic lights, mass panic, people dying, starvation.

    So we depend on electricity.

Without it we are not free to discuss it's implications with people from all over the world.

Does anyone else see the irony??
