I go on facebook about once every 2 weeks to see what's going on. I don't really give much thought into anyone's status updates whether they are religious or not. I'm just bothered by the large number of requests I'm given. I have to waste time ignoring them all...

    Darn straight.

But it's sort of the same thing, right?
    Right?

Just don't do anything. I don't even look at requests anymore. Somone in a virtual world I'm in added me because they recognized my name. Now they send me requests weekly to join groups... in a language I can't even read!!!

That must be quite annoying. It seems as though the request whores have nothing else to do then to hang in facebook all day continuously posting requests.

People have cut me without explanation, other people have cut other people and I've only known I've not been cut because they've updated that if you can see this update you've survived a cut. So I figure its common.

I have people on my friendslist who I wish werent there and I could cut at some point, work colleagues and they all friended each other and it sort of just happened without my thinking, wait, do I really want them in the list? I did try to friend someone at a time who told me they kept it exclusive to close friends and family and I was fine with that.

Updates of that kind shouldnt bother you, contra opinions or stuff like that used to bother me when I was younger but now I realise its about them, not necessarily about me and I shouldnt feel anything in particular. It would bother me if it were sectarian or something like that, condemning people to hell.

For a while one or two people in my friends list were posting updates about their views on homosexuality, which I didnt share, I just didnt pay any attention but they started to contact me with why I hadnt copy pasted the posts or whatever and I simply said I didnt agree, one of them at least went off on one and started swearing at me so they got cut and blocked. Simple as. Like Cee Cee says the internet gives you that option why not use it?

BTW I dont like the phrase uppity attached to anything, it smacks of a kind of oppressive power imbalance. Same as saying someone should know their place or something like that.

I think idealistically you are correct, and a goal to work toward is not letting it bother one.

However, if you've been badly burned or are still dealing with it, and your family relationships still have unresolved issues because of beliefs like that, then it's kind of hard to just ignore. Firmer boundaries have to be installed and it takes time to do that, especially in relationships where you never wanted to have to draw hard lines to begin with.

Sounds good. I tend to not like to join groups anyway, even if I'm part of a particular demographic, and don't like getting bombarded by requests even if I'm sympathetic to the cause to some degree... I delete just about all of them. I don't like it when people assume that just because I'm in a demographic, I suddenly should support everything they support.

Oh yeah, I totally understand how it can bug people, I've got triggers too like anyone else.

When I was younger I used to have real issues with Christian evangelism, especially those who were trying to refight the reformation, perhaps they still bother me but I can deal with it a little better and I realise that they could be trying to meet their own needs and shore up their own insecurities by their actions, its them, not me and I dont need to make it about me you know?

I'll confess to a totally irrational dislike of street preachers, seriously they drive me nuts, although this isnt restricted to street preachers and I get the same way about street theatre or soap box politicos too. I used to really hate the socialist workers party at university.

It wasnt group requests, no one ever sent me a request for groups, especially when they saw that I was a member of the contrary groups from my profile.

I'd not reject someone out of hand because their opinions or politics are different, I tend to find that there's room for agreement most of the time on something or other, people dont tend to be that myopic or blinkered that that's not possible.

What is was was people posting something in an update and asking others to cut and paste it to show support and then contacting me on the chat function to ask why I'd not done so. Which I though was a no brainer.
