There are two tragedies in life. One is not to get your heart's desire. The other is to get it.

George Bernard Shaw, "Man and Superman" (1903), act 4
Irish dramatist & socialist (1856 - 1950)

What do you think this means? That the fantasy or ideal never measures up to the reality or what?

If ever I get my heart's desire, I probably won't feel very different than now. Or that's what we should believe if we don't want to postpone our hapiness forever.

Perhaps the real tragedy is that we're too absorbed in our goals, but the thought of not having big dreams disgusts me even more.

It certainly sounds cool and deep, but it doesn't hold water.

Is he thinking of the miserable rich and famous? That would make sense. They desire fame and riches, but in the end they are still lacking what they need to be truly happy -- meaningful connections and self-esteem.

He surely cannot be referring to people that are in a loving relationship. That just doesn't make sense.

Possibly a relationship with a very desirable yet untrue spouse. Speaking from experience was he, perhaps?

Thought-provoking, but far from meaningful.

Key is in the meaning of desire. Or rather, the absolutes of desire.

Once you obtain your desires, there's nothing left to desire. And that's a cold prospect. Then again, never attaining your desires leaves much to desire.

In that sense, life has only one tragedy. And that is life itself.

I don't like the quote though. Life isn't as black and white as the quote deems it to be. It's based on very flawed assumptions. It's an issue made out of a non-issue. A very negative outlook on life without the arguements to back it up. It's defensive, evasive and depressive.

Who-ever came up with the quote, was he a Fi-dom by chance? Just curious. xD

Not getting yeur heart's desire means yeu've strived yeur entire life to reach a goal but never made it. It's painful and shows that things just turned out wrong, things were against yeu, or yeu just plain weren't good enough.

To GET yeur heart's desire... tends to mean yeu have little else left to achieve. Yeu can set a new goal, but it won't be the same. That one thing is special, sacred in its' own way, not in a religious sort of ideal though. It's like... once yeu have attained the single greatest accomplishment of yeur life... the rest is the anti-climax to the book; a dwindling, a fading, little left but to burn out and fade away.

The only time these tragedies are truly averted, are when yeu make yeur life's goals just before the end, when yeu still have time to savour the victory, yet not enough time for the realization to sink in that it's essentially over and there's nothing left.

Another awesome quote, which I think yeu may appreciate if yeu liked this one, is from Fleetwood Mac:

"There's two kinds of trouble in this world: Living, dying."

Oh, good explanation. :)

I'm reminded of the lyrics from a Chris Daughtry song:

Be careful what you wish for,
'Cause you just might get it all.
You just might get it all,
And then some you don't want

This.

The problem with many short quotes is that they are like the Bible. There are an infinite number of ways you can justify them to fit however you're feeling at the time.

Or maybe that's a good thing and not a problem? I don't know.
