I'm assuming you mean someone who believed in God (ie: met and had a relationship) and then chose not to believe anymore. The answer is yes, they are an atheist.

(The flip of this is that if a person was an atheists and embraced God, then would they be Christian?)

Yes. One can ask for forgiveness even after they're dead only to find out they were (possibly) wrong about there being no afterlife
everyone uses every function about evenly. take NE for example. if there are those who don't use it much, then why are there such massive amounts of people constantly flowing through Wallmart with 20 items or less?

Ooh, a more serious and on topic thought.

Atheist 1: I do not like what I do not know.
Atheist 2: I do not like not knowing.

This may be key in defining which atheists are thought ill off, and which are not. o/

There's a special corner in Hell reserved for them, next to the people who had non-marital sex.

Hmmm. And what about pre-non-marital sex?

Petrus: I'm sorry sir, I can't let you in.
Person: Why! Whyyyy!? I have been stricly christian all my life! I've never done a single thing wrong!
Petrus: Well, if you hadn't died when you did and lived on, you would have eventually broken the rules, sir. I'm sorry, sir. The all-father is all-knowing, you know. The elevator down is that way.
