This one's for Professor nicolita! Find out where in the United States your dialect is from by taking this short 25 question quiz: http://spark.rstudio.com/jkatz/dialectquiz/.

Most Similar:
1 New Bedford MA 48.2
2 Falmouth MA 48.0
3 Fall River MA 47.5
4 Plymouth MA 47.0
5 Brockton MA 46.4

Least Similar:
1 Duluth MN 30.9
2 Green Bay WI 31.4
3 Madison WI 31.8
4 Rockford IL 31.8
5 Minneapolis MN 31.9

Funny. I've never been to Massachusetts, but I guess I should go and meet some people who speak like me. (The place I am from did show up on the map as very red, though, so this test was accurate for me outside of naming the top 5 cities.)

I got through.

It said that my dialect is most like the good people of Texas--Mesquite to be exact. Haha...hit most of the spots in the South.

Least like Wisconsin and Illinois.

I finally got through. The results are all over map (pun intended).

Most similar cities:

Independence, Missouri - 39.5
Lee's Summit, Missouri - 39.3
Detroit, Michigan - 39.2
Warren, Michigan - 38.5
Livonia, Michigan - 38.5

Least similar cities:

Milwaukee, Wisconsin - 29.0
Racine, Wisconsin - 29.1
Tuscaloosa, Alabama - 29.7
Albany, New York - 29.8
Hartford, Connecticut - 30.1

I'm not sure what makes 'Missoura' a hot-spot, nor Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia and Western Pennsylvania. Big western cities—Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles—jive with my accent and dialect in my experience. Most people aren't able to discern me from someone from somewhere on the west coast, based only on my speech.

I find it kind of funny that Milwaukee is the lowest spot out of the entire country given that that Wisconsin-Minnesota accent seems to be commonly thought of as something close to my western Canadian accent. Funny that more northern cities like Albany and Hartford are 'cold' spots on the map too. And yet 'Bahston' looks pretty 'warm'.

They got me dead on. Talk just like everyone else in my region. Do you guys have names for sunny rain? I have no word for that, but the options were so cool!

I don't have a name for sunny rain. The better question is what the hell is "the little gray creature (that looks like an insect but is actually a crustacean) that rolls up into a ball when you touch it?"

I got to that question and my face went  Same with the question about "the small road parallel to the highway".

"What do you call the paper container in which you might bring home items you bought at the store?" also threw me for a loop. Paper? Paper bags (or whatever term you might prefer) have been scarce since I was a kid. The stores switched to plastic a long time ago, and now they're slowly phasing out bags altogether. At many places you're expected to bring a bag with you.

It's interesting to note that the spread between "most similar" and "least similar" for you and Honor is about 20 'points', whereas for me it was only about 10, and the highest was only 39.5 vs. closer to 50 for the two of you. I guess it really can tell, to an extent, that I'm a 'furriner'.

Grey crustacean is a rolly poley
Road parallel to the freeway is a service drive

Haha I didn't get the rolly poley question though! Did you take the long form?

You probably did. It says the survey that the test was attached to was completed ten years ago...

It thinks I'm a Texan, but I'm a Hoosier. Guess it's not that different?
