Default Animation in Signatures and Avatars

There have been a few questions recently about animated signatures and avatars. Last year, we had number of people who put up large animated signatures. Though I personally feel these can sometimes be in good taste, at least in avatars, it turns out we had a lot of complaints about the animation being distracting. It was already covered in the site rules but was further clarified last year as a result of these complaints. Our enforcement on this issue has not been as consistent as it could be. It turns out that VBulletin has an automated option to prohibit animated signatures and avatars. Until such time as our members collectively decide that they want to allow animation, the option to disallow them has been enabled. Feel free to raise any comments or questions.

Edit: Please weigh in on this topic - whether this should be allowed or not and specifics related to that.

what an awful decision. distracting from what? this is 2015, if gifs are too over-stimulating, you should probably avoid the Internet in general.

Um, disable it please. I vote for animation and more fantastical ways of expressing ourselves.

This isn't new. If we want to change it that's fine but it needs to be based on collective feedback from the membership.

I think animation should be allowed within reason. If it isn't fast-paced or involving a lot of flashing (and therefore having the potential to cause someone a seizure), it should be allowed. In the case of signatures, I'd say the same thing, as long as it isn't super big and taking up half a page. I don't care what constitutes a signature as long as I don't have to scroll past a novel to get past it. I honestly do not find animation distracting.

I'll provide examples of what I think is "distracting" or not for clarification. I don't know how to resize gifs so I'm only talking for animation, not size.

    Not distracting:

Animation should be allowed, who in the community even thinks that disabling this is a good decision?
Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion man.

    I am pro-gif.

However, if they're too large, they should be put in put in a spoiler.
