It got better after the first few weeks and I now have iron nipples. The let-down can still occasionally pinch though.

There are thousands of websites where women tell their sad story of how they couldn't produce enough milk and how frustrating that is and they collectively hate on the supposedly omnipresent maminazis that show off their excessive roduction but it's hard to find advice if you produce too much and you accidentally shower your kid in the face with the equivalent of a garden hose (overproduction also means more lactoserich foremilk and thus more bellyaches for the kid)!

Breastfeeding is a beautiful thing though, do it, gals!

It hurt for a few weeks, for me, but once I got through that stage it was fine. "Iron nipples," as you say. I just hate that young women are surprised by having some pain in the beginning, and are even told "if it hurts you're doing it wrong," which was not the case for me. But I ended up nursing both of mine for 2+ years each and I treasure the memories. It was very sweet. (And if I'm honest, that prolactin relaxation at letdown got me through some tough emotional times.)

There's a correlation between pain while breastfeeding and skin colour?

I don't think anybody has ever studied it formally, but my midwife said that in her observation the pastier the mama, the more pain she has in the early days. Gingers are in for a world of hurt.
