I like to sit with any changes for a day or two to see if my initial reaction changes over time. So far, I can see uses for the hashtags, but I'm not sure exactly how the user tag list works (is it instead of tagging in post or in addition to?) and if it will be useful to a majority of users or not.

ETA: Okay, I took the time to re-read the OP and my initial reaction is that the user tagging probably won't be all that useful compared to the mention function.

ETA: Changed my mind again. Might be useful after all.

My one problem with the user tag list is that it gets in the way, aesthetically. Is there a place it could be placed where it might look better? Perhaps at the bottom of the thread rather than above it (and below where the page numbers are). That way people could get their notifications but then you wouldn't have to see the list every time you went on a new page.

I don't get why we need tags and mentions. Seems redundant. I'm probably missing something though.

I guess it might make threads look less cluttered? Like instead of, you know, doing what I do and make an entire paragraph filled with mentions of certain members so they notice the thread, a tag list might make it easier and not distract from the thread's point.

But I do agree that mentions and tag lists are kind of redundant, at least with OPs. I guess the difference is that user tags are for the OP and mentions are for responses.
