There were at least three or four mods involved in discussing that instance. We'd considered GYing the thing. But by the point we got to that thread, there was meaningful discussion that we didn't want to shut down. We also don't want to shut down any very insightful thread that happens to tangentially have some slight slur. We removed the part that we thought was clear 'hate speech,' but then removal naturally raises questions of what was removed, whether context was lost, and so on.

I use that instance as an example -- we want to try isolate 'hate speech' from 'discussion of groups,' so as not to shut down meaningful discussion. We're talking internally about how generally to do so and how to codify it in the FAQ, and we'd welcome input in this thread, too.

Another hypothetical -- an editorial newspaper clipping from the 20s stating that a KKK member had given a talk about the good deeds that the Klan had done, and from the author's POV the member gave a good talk. That's a thing that happened. It shouldn't be off the table.
could you msg the op and tell them to edit it or it will be removed?

That's an intriguing suggestion, honestly... although they probably don't want the insult(s) to ride until someone decides to edit. (What if they won't be on the forum for another 24 hours? Or even letting it remain an hour long is too much, pro'bly.)

perhaps but they could copy/paste the original in a pm and say edit this if you want to put it back. i have removed it.

    My two cents:

Discussing hate speech isn't an issue, nor is discussing the points that those hate groups might make that might be valid as long as it is done in a non-derogatory way. No using the material to drag people to through the mud, or demean them, but honest discussion as to the arguments made in the article for instance, or the sources on which a hypothesis presented wrt to the hate group or for that matter their target should be fair game.

Granted...it's bound to create some heat and muddled waters, since it stays a sensitive topic and will require people to be on their best behaviour in order to get that kind of thread working properly. Jumping to conclusions, and allowing personal biases to shine through will be might tempting in this situation.

What is the benefit of doing this over deleting it and informing the OP? I'm not seeing any at all?

That makes a lot of sense but I sort of think you're posting in the spirit of the devils beatitudes when you post that.

so that they had a chance to edit rather than the whole idea of a thread being lost like jennifer said. i personally would appreciate the copy/paste into a pm idea because i would straight up forget what i had said.
