Yikes. I always thought me and him were quite similar, so much so I'd almost fair for my own safety on this forum.

I'd like to think he holds true to similar ethics as I do, as to not cross lines too far and doing your best to subjectively adjust said lines respectively in contrast to those you deal with.

It does make me curious as to what line he crossed. Although I'm pretty certain it's not a line I'd cross regardless of knowing what that is, since I don't take crossing lines lightly.

Private messages for a start, reps and other exchanges which are not public to all members but can be read by the administrators. Why what would you consider? Or are you one of the crazy total transparency thinkers like the creator of facebook? To be honest if you are I'm going to judge you for it.

In fact, short of shooting up a theater full of people who are trying to watch a movie about a comic book character [or harming me personally], I really don't care who someone is off line as long as there online posts amuse (then again I am not encumbered with the responisblitys of internet forum ownership).

I withhold judgement against all involved.
Seriously? That is interesting, you dont think it would have any influence what so ever? I know that I stopped reading Koestler's books after I discovered the guy was a rapist, just couldnt enjoy them anymore so I cant decontextualise writing in quite the same way. Extreme example I know but anyway.

What would happen if I'ld write a very naughty private message to myself and then publish it on the forum ?

Pretty sure that's a bannable offence.

I got advised something along those lines at least a while back when a poster was sending me threatening messages via PM, properly threatening ones too, and I mentioned it in a thread in which they were escalating and going down the same route.

PMs are PMs, if you're getting PMs which you dont want or which are inappropriate I think there's ways to get that fixed by speaking with an administrator.

If you have permission to post something, I'm not sure why that would be a bannable offense...unless of course you decided to report your own post and insist you didn't give yourself permission and demanded an infraction.

Posting porn pics of course is its own issue.

Seriously? It never ceases to amaze me how drastically a member's self-concept can differ from the persona they project...
Fwiw, it's difficult to imagine how you could be less alike.

I'd like to think he holds true to similar ethics as I do, as to not cross lines too far and doing your best to subjectively adjust said lines respectively in contrast to those you deal with.
Let's just acknowledge that he didn't share your respect for appropriate boundaries, and leave it at that.

It does make me curious as to what line he crossed. Although I'm pretty certain it's not a line I'd cross regardless of knowing what that is, since I don't take crossing lines lightly.
I think this is an excellent result of this decision. One of many. It's good if it makes people more cautious and circumspect. He was one of the handful of people who consistently lowered the tone and his supposed "tenure" made that acceptable. He abused the powers he had as admin and after he lost those as a result, he found other avenues to abuse. The fact that he seemed to do so with impunity set a nasty precedent which risked making the forum a dark, seedy place.

The M.O. of such people is infinitely more subtle and complex than the simple breaking of hard-and-fast forum rules, which is why they can parasitise a community for years undetected. What they break is the implicit social contract that allows us to build up trust and goodwill in a community. You can't really 'legislate' for that, you have to use your own judgement.

As an aside, I think the current crop of mods is the perhaps the best we've ever had. Not a bad apple amongst them. They are doing a fantastic job and I'm genuinely grateful for their efforts (I don't say that enough). I really hope it's enough to lure back some of the great people we've lost over the years. I'm confident it's enough to shape the forum in a healthy, balanced direction.

Perhaps I've just been assimilated after all this time. *shudders*

Those are some serious allegations though, Salome. And as he isn't exactly here to defend himself, I'm not sure this is really appropriate to discuss. I guess that is part of the reason why Haight decided to cite 'privacy' as a reason for the lack of explanation. Usually, with bannings, there is at least some information as the reason for the ban is often a post that many members were privy to see prior to the banning and removal of the offending post(s). In this case, all we have is hear say and speculation, really.

I haven't cited anything that isn't already in the public domain.

Although I have more than hearsay and speculation on which to base my own personal judgements, I don't pretend to know all the material Haight had available for his consideration. Nor do I wish to know. What I know is enough to ban him several times over, so I'm content. (And no, if you PM me I won't discuss it.)
