Why? I think I've considered a solution for most objections.

The group doesn't have to be permanent, and we can work with an extra ammount to compensate the flake outs.

But would the subscription cost change as the number of members changed? Would it be a once a year fee for subscribers?

Id suggest the open tab-system. 2-5 dollars a month. It is what charities usually do with their subscribers for good reasons. Its easier for people to pay, as they barely notice it - the equivalent of a coffee in most cases- and it makes planning for the expenses to come way easier.

I would participate in such a group, provided the anonymity issue could be addressed.

I don't support anything that requires automatic charges to credit cards. I don't see how that could be truly anonymous, and I prefer to make explicit payments once/twice per year.

It is certainly possible to do 'year subscriptions' as well. And there is a system that does the automated process without it being charged to credit cards. In fact, the big charities work with this - not sure what it is called in English.

It basically means you tell your bank to every month deposit a steady amount to another bank account. If you at any point decide to stop that order, it is certainly within your power, and you can at any moment alter the amount as well. I'm not sure if your bank can make it anonymous, but since they work for you, you should be able to ask them that. It is basically the same as depositing a one time yearly amount, it just gets broken up in a monthly fee, as it is again more beneficial for all parties included, as I stated before. (I used to work in fundraising for WWF, we used this system ).

Well, then, I would prefer a once a year fee. And also one that would stay fairly consistent from year to year. But, depending on the fee, subscription probably isn't my first choice.

Too bad crowd funding doesn't seem to be working in this case.

My bank cannot transfer funds anonymously. A number of banking rules changed over the past decade, to make it easier for authorities to track criminal/terrorist financial activity.

Also, I don't see how it is better for a charity to get monthly payments vs. a lump sum at the beginning of the year. They are certain of the money then, and may even earn a bit of interest over the months.

Well, I gotta say as far as ads go, I've been watching them on one of the other sites that I'm sure many of us know, and it's been an issue.

The issue is with the ad source company, not the site (necessarily), and specifically the clients who post ads. There have been a number of ads have appeared where additional browser windows pop up or the page relocates all on its own. And you don't have to be actively loading the page -- the ads are triggered to reload themselves without user intervention, so you can be across the room briefly doing something else, and suddenly your computer will start speaking as a new ad / new windows pop up. I've also lost posts I was working on from time to time when an unexpected redirect occurred.

Some of these sites have been labeled as malicious. Recently, I was also bounced to a porn site -- an experience mirrored with a few other users.

So it's not just "oh, an ad shows up" -- advertisers exploit the ad format and you'd better have your screening software up to date and you'd also better be prepared to suffer some inconvenience. It's still an option, but I want us to be realistic about it.

Good to know about the ads. I agree that we all need to be aware of the consequences of each choice before deciding.
