Now tell that sister of yours if she wants some Glossopteris cake from uncle Falcarius she is going to have to 'befriend' him.

A fast way to add people who were already on your buddy list before the update, if you did not understand this post.:

User CP > Your Control Panel > Contacts & Friends (see thumbnail )

If you want to add any of the listed people click the bottom box lower box that says 'friend'.

Then click 'save change' that is in the bottom right hand corner. (see thumbnail)

I'm thinking the friends feature is a new idea, the "visitor messages" feature would be like a public rep/PM or whatnot. I'm not 100% sure what the friends feature gives you (gotta re-read the release notes)

I totally love the new social functions, I think it's an excellent idea to be able to socialize and network and stuff without it 'taking over' the actual forums, means there's a way for everyone to get what they want out of it without bothering those with other visions.

The only real down side for the world in general is that I'll now get so addicted to the social side of things that my wisdom-bejewelled posts will diminish and become a rarity in the forums...

    Ivy,

    What's the "Tags" feature for?

Tags seem to be a huge fad among blogging & social networking type of services. The intent is to add tags to a thread/post/whatever that ascribe simple searchable attributes about that post, so someone can use said tags as a key for finding the post on a search (or alternately, some kind of box that shows the most popular tags which lead you to all posts/threads that were tagged as such).

So the new search feature probably has this incorporated into it?

And, do you think the tags are Google searchable, or is it an internal feature?

I believe Google can index by them, although I haven't found the definitive documentation that states so--but this page makes reference to it: vBSEO Google/Yahoo Sitemap Generator - vBulletin.org Forum

The search feature actually does have a "Search by tag:" field in it. I'm guessing by the presence of that field that "Search by keyword" doesn't incorporate the tags.

Then it seems pointless to me.

    What's your view?
