No one can read the the comments and see the exact number of points you have received. Those are only located in your "User CP" section.

And no. . . You cannot turn it off.

It says I have 12 points but shows only one comment. Does that mean the 11 others are lazy and couldn't be bothered leaving a comment?

Actually, Haight is wrong (never get tired of saying that). Everyone started with 0 points. People can rate you without leaving comments.

There are also ways to gain more reputation-altering power.

    Register Date Factor
For every 90 days, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power.

    Post Count Factor
For every 1000 posts, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power.

    Reputation Point Factor
For every 100 points of reputation, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power.

Mods and admins have higher reputation-altering power, as well.

** Everytime we click "add" to a person's reputation, how many points do we add, or is it arbitrary? As with take away.

For every 90 days of registration? Is this retroactive?
That's a nice touch I must admit. Now we'll have a kind of clique factor

Seriously though it will hopefully help outline those malcontent's and warn them before any admin action is required. Now if you can figure out a purgatory and auto ban level so the server restricts people/ bans them at certain levels then we can really be self administering for the most part. Aww it's almost like the admins are reaching retirement age and are looking for a system to look after their baby after they're gone (or they want a day off every once in a while ).
Isn't it time for a colourful metaphor?

What about people who give out negative rep just to be mean or ornery or for kicks or whatever, and not because anyone else would think that person truly deserved it?

Hrm. I'll have to look into this.

It is not arbitrary. Every new member starts with 1 point of reputation-giving power. 90 days from your registration date, you'll be given another point.

Other ways to increase your power are above in Haight's post.

Yes, it is retroactive, so if I'm doing my math correctly, you have four points of reputation-giving power. Three for being a member for so long, and another for having over 1000 posts.

I think it's sort of a fun way for members to have a say in which posters are great, and more importantly, which posters the madmins need to monitor. It can be abused, but I get the feeling that it won't happen here. But like Haight said, this is just a test.

That is a valid concern. However, I think that it is important to test the system before assuming that it will be abused. If a couple of members decide to abuse the system, I'm sure that there is probably a way to take away their reputation-giving power.

Well, in general, your ability to give points is limited as NPG describes. You have a very limited pool.

Someone could "waste" them if they are feeling vengeful, but in general, since they have such little capital to spend and earn capital only by long-term participation, people will generally spend them on people they appreciate.

    (Is that right?)
