I think my new reputation text is hilarious: "Alcearos should totally be like your new best friend".

People can give them to you for your posts. Check your user CP (on the left side of the taskbar under the logo) for comments people have left you.

I still don't understand the point system. When I leave rep, it doesn't ask me how many points, it just asks if I'm leaving positive or negative rep. I can't figure out how that leads to odd-numbered rep point totals. If every instance of rep is worth the same, then why a number of points at all?

The amount of reputation you give is determined by a combination how long ago you joined, your current reputation, and your post count.

So a positive rep from a long-time member with a high post count and a high reputation will be worth the most, and a positive rep from a new member with a low post count and smaller reputation will be considerably lower. It can't be selected/adjusted, in other words.

Ah, gotcha. Thanks, that clears up a lot of confusion for me.

mip, FM, perhaps this post earlier may help you work it out:

Maverick has a special bada** level all to himself "Baddest Mofo on the board" or something. Otherwise for the rest of us, this is how it works:

There are also ways to gain more reputation-altering power.

    Register Date Factor
For every 90 days, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power.

    Post Count Factor
For every 1000 posts, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power.

    Reputation Point Factor
For every 100 points of reputation, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power.

Mods and admins have higher reputation-altering power, as well.

You don't have control over how many points you dish out. How many points you give out is based on how long you've been here, how many posts you have, and I think your own reputation number but I'm not 100% sure of that. Anyway, it keeps going up over time (unless you get negative rep, in which case it drops to 0), and everybody's number is different, so your number could be just about anything depending on who has given you rep. For example, I always have and always will give out exactly 20 points, because that's what the program is set for admins to give. A few members also give out 20+ points now, because of their length of membership and post totals (mmm, cereal!).

Did that clear (muddy) it up? (the semiotics smiley, representing the interplay of signifier and signified)

Edit: Thanks for quoting that, aelan! I was too lazy to look it up.

Also, since that was posted, I changed the worst rep to Maverick's "Baddest Mofo" and manually sent him wayyy down to play along with his persona (although it didn't match his Good Citizen Lone Ranger avatar, but whatevs, at least there were guns.)
