What are some things a person who is passive aggressive will say:

I've got one... "I'm sorry you feel/felt that way" (when apologizing)

I'm interested in knowing what phrases you've come across when someone is being passive aggresive or some other game humans often play.

What can you come up with?

What are some things a person who is passive aggressive will say:

Heard last weekend at my SILs:

"I have this great idea... I don't know that you'll think it's great... (insert stupid idea here)..."

I've got one... "I'm sorry you feel/felt that way" (when apologizing)

Hahhahhah. This is one I use intentionally as a "screw you". You apologise, but at the same time you don't. Not many people see it that way, except my husband, who also uses it. We tend to use it on each other mainly <snort>

Another heard at SILs last month:

"Well now that I'm 50 I've decided I can say whatever I want and not have to apologise for it" - this prefaced every comment on religion and / or politics, two topics we avoid when visiting her, because, well, she's nuts :D

The tactic I've seen employed most frequently is an implicative response - saying something that looks innocuous enough without consideration of the subtext/grasping the subtext, but in reality includes a rebuttal or warning. And that subtext usually happens to be only one level above "blindingly obvious" where ambigiuty is concerned.

I just LOVE when someone uses age as an excuse
to say whatever the heck they want.
More please.

I am tempted to meta-forum :whistling: but I won't.

Instead I give you this: passiveaggressivenotes

for the purposes of this project, we’re using a pretty broad (and to some extent, arbitrary) definition of “passive-aggressive” that roughly correlates with how the term is popularly used. as the new york times wrote: “the classic description of the behavior captures a stubborn malcontent, someone who passively resists fulfilling routine tasks, complains of being misunderstood and underappreciated, unreasonably scorns authority and voices exaggerated complaints of personal misfortune.” and to quote dr. scott wetzler, a clinical psychologist and the author of living with the passive-aggressive man: “a joke can be the most skillful passive-aggressive act there is.”

all that said, many of the notes found here aren’t really passive-aggressive even by our generous standards — though quite a few of these are, in fact, responses to passive-aggressive behavior. some of these notes are really more aggressive in tone, and some of them are more passive — polite, even — but they all share a common sense of frustration that’s been channeled into written form rather than a direct confrontation. it’s barbed criticism disguised as something else — helpful advice, a funny joke, simple forgetfulness. really, what it comes down to is that this project has very quickly taken on a life of its own — one that defies any kind of label. but, like pornography, you know it when you see it.

Edit: Great thread btw.

Edit 2: OMG was I just passive-aggressive in a thread about passive-aggressiveness? :blushing:

Haha, I love that site. I Stumbled across it randomly and miraculously the same day it started and I've been hooked ever since.

And as for anything passive aggressive, I don't know. Probably everything I say is passive aggressive in some way.

Oh and I say "I'm sorry if you were offended, I didn't mean to hurt you" or some variant all the time...but it's sincere, I swear!

Would these be passive-aggressive?

"I know what you think of me, so you can probably guess how I feel about you."

"Personally, I vehemently disagree, but I see where you're going."

Two of the most frustrating I've come up against:

1) "If you say so" - said in a tone that makes it clear the speaker doesn't think so. Variant - "whatever you say."

2) "Whatever you have to tell yourself"
