LOL, I've taken to saying that to people when I don't feel like thinking of an answer, but still give them some faux credit for their mental faculties.
Relationships have normal ebbs and flows. They do not automatically get better and better when the participants learn more and more about each other. Instead, the participants have to work through the tensions of the relationship (the dialectic) while they learn and group themselves and a parties in a relationships. At times the relationships is very open and sharing. Other time, one or both parties to the relationship need their space, or have other concerns, and the relationship is less open. The theory posits that these cycles occur throughout the life of the relationship as the persons try to balance their needs for privacy and open relationship.

    +1.

Even if we were close enough for you to ask me in confidence, it doesn't make much sense to give you a from-the-hip response if I'm not sure where your head's at.

That would be a disservice to you.

How do I correct this ignorance? By asking probing questions. Open-ended questions will generally give way to linear analysis.

Valuable advice takes time to unpack.

Exactly! Or, I will tell someone what they should or shouldn't do, but not before I dig and uncover every last corner of their lives related to the question. I mean, I like to give solid advice!

    Precisely!

Haha no, but I hate making decisions for people when I can barely make them for myself.

I'm good for a listening shoulder, but not for advice that takes choices away.

    Ooooooh. I love magic 8-ball.

It helps me making arbitrary decisions that I can then reject and do something else instead.

Haha! Too bad you can blame it when you make a bad decision. Or, can you...?
