Without bothering to reread this thread (and I don't even remember what I wrote at this point -- talk about necro thread), you're suggesting the type descriptions are seemingly good on their own but simply not a a good reflection of true Jungian function theory?
Yep. It's probably impossible to avoid redefining functions to fit types, if you insist on making them fit. And that explains why people can come up with two or more separate function orders for the same type, which all make about the same sense.

Fair enough.

And that's the problem with starting with a predefined structure.

I don't think personality will be nearly as elegant as Beebe's "eight-function" theory tries to make it, especially when trying to shoehorn functions into particular categories. I think I did it more as an exercise of his theory than because it completely made sense, and to see if it provided any useful insight on particular patterns of behavior that might crop up within a generalized type...
