Extroversion vs Introversion. What really defines E and I? Bust Stereotypes? ;).

How so?

It was written based on INTJs so may not cover SPs at all I guess.

People don't drain me. I don't really need to be on my own. I do need to do what I want to do, so that is why I need to get away from people sometimes. But that is not about people and interaction. Also, I'd say I tend towards having broad interests.

I don't get the whole people drain me thing.

I's precocious self-image vs E's 'taking it all'

Maybe in my imagination, but I noted these things about E vs I yesterday.

The premise being more or less: what can you say / what can't you say in a conversation, how deep can you go, in how far is it offensive to the other person if the one mentions things the other can't quite understand...

-I's compete with eachother over what they have to compensate, each their strategy
-E's simply don't have to compensate, they 'take it all' - because or as long as they are socially satisfied they can deal with more of a person
-This is why I's are always aware (are their tactics protected?)
-The image an I has of himself is precocious
-E's simply stay who/how/what they are (being on the contrary foregoing)
-I's can pretty well tease or push eachother (because they present an image / knowledge that they actually are/have not yet); this may make I's feel like a failure
-I's may think E's hold them back, while E's actually grant them (E's just remind the I's of former versions of themselves)
-I's live beyond, in front
-E's 'deal', admit/confess to who they are
-I's empty out their need/energy; E's cherish it / live it (out)

I could be awfully beside the point, probably mostly in what I attribute to E vs I, and in the unclarified premise, but I think it sketches a picture.

This division continues to bother me, as someone with really weak extroversion. I fall on both sides of the line.

Went to a party this past weekend full of raging extroverts. It was like a wall of sound and energizing to the max where we were all talking at the same time, music blaring in the background and yet, still able to listen. We finished each others thoughts and sentences. Really fun!

But the following day, I found myself glad to be in a quiet atmosphere with no desire to talk to anyone for hours.

I'm fine being alone and fine to be with people, although there are people who drain me and others who can get me wired.

good thread idea!!

common stereotypes that i break:

  • any social interaction that demands me be on "good"/appropriate behavior can be really tiring
  • i can't handle tons of physical stimulation. intense light and sound and smell get to me after a while
  • i love big crowds but i need my own space after a while
  • certain people REALLY drain me
  • i prefer to be in a smaller group within a bigger group than just in the bigger group

it's still taking me time to get used to the idea of being an extravert.

Me too ;D Get me drunk, sit me next to the band, PA speakers, fog, massive cigarette smoke, and strobe lights. Then watch me wander to the restroom, puke, then aimlessly walk outside and go to sleep in the parking lot.

I'd make a crappy rockstar.

Or maybe a good one, not sure.

Once I am comfortable with someone I am very energised by social interactions, I'm the guy at the party that takes forever to warm up and then in the end is like "what do you mean you're sleepy it's only 4:30 we have the whole morning left!?". When you're in those moments when everyone is just chilling out and having a laugh, those times can go forever for me.

I think we are all introverts and extraverts. "Using" Se energises me, being out and about in nature or playing sports, being fully absorbed in the moment and the action, I feel really alive during and after that. So in one sense/context (Sensing) I'm very much an extravert, more so than non Se users. However Fe, Te and Ne are a different story, I think socialising is a lot of Fe+Ne (connecting and interpreting) so if you're weak in those you'll feel drained by social interactions, that's why ESFJs are social butterflies, if you're weak in Te you'll feel drained by being to restricted or by too much routine. So I'm energised by Se, not overly bothered by Te but very drained by Fe and Ne (especially together) so overall I'm an introvert.

To me the stereotypical "social/energised by people" extraverts are Fe doms.

I first tested as an INTJ within a psychology class that I was taking but quickly realized that there was no way that I nor anyone else in the class would buy that idea that I was an introvert. This is mainly because I was opinionated, the most talkative person in the entire room, enamored with debating, and was obsessed with accomplishing tasks in the outside world. I then analyzed functions and realized that use more Te then Ni and that I didn’t share the relatively passive manner in which my introverted counterparts would seek leadership positions.

It's a generalisation but the idea is an introvert would delve deeper than your average extrovert into subjects of interest but the extrovert would have a wider range of subjects of interest.
I’d imagine that this is more of a Judger/Perciever difference. A Perceiver will have multiple projects going on at the same time and will typically gravitate to whatever they enjoy. A Judger will be more practical, and regardless of what other disciplines they would like to become involved in, will typically attempt to master one discipline in order to profit from it. Thus why Judgers have a large amount of finished projects that they’ve focused all of their energy upon while Percievers are Jacks of All Trades with several unfinished works.

I saw this interesting science program in tv where one psychology said that one difference between the extroverted and the introverted people is that extoverted people can concentrate better in noisy and distracting environment.
The MBTI definition of an extrovert is different from both the colloquial and Big Five definition of an extrovert. It’s very doubtful that the scientists in that program were referring to MBTI.

MBTI extroverts are difficult to detect since Intuitive Extroverts often won’t be as sociable as the stereotypical extrovert. This is largely because there are so few people who interested in talking about the same matters that they are, so an unsociable MBTI extrovert can often look like a stereotypical introvert.

ISFPs are possibly the most extroverted introverts. They are SF and are social and worldly based because of that, extraverted sensors, have low introverted thinking to keep them in their own heads too much etc. My ISFP friend seems like an extrovert and I typed her as such until she took a test.
