Where to stay in Amsterdam

Not sure if this is the best place for this thread... Mods, feel free to move!

I'll be in Amsterdam for about a week this summer and I'm a bit overwhelmed by my hotel choices. For those of you who have travelled there before, would you recommend staying near the museums? Or a bit further north near the main square area? Or other any other suggestions.
