    Default The Food Substitute Thread

Okay, so I can't find poblano peppers anywhere. I was wondering if there's a pepper with a similar taste and heat level I can use.

This has no doubt happened to you, too. You are getting ready to make something, but you realize you've forgotten an ingredient. Or maybe you can't find an ingredient in any of your stores. Or maybe you're allergic to an ingredient. Whatever the case, it's annoying.

Anyway, I thought maybe we could use this thread to ask other knowledgeable people what sort of foods we could use in place of a certain ingredient. Sort of like a food help center.

Don't worry, I promise I'll contribute to this thread when other people need help.

I never follow recipes exactly anyway. But no I don't even know what poblano peppers are. Surely google might have some suggestions?

the only one I know offhand is that you can use applesauce instead of eggs for baking.

Anaheim would be close or big jalapeno. What are you making?

    White bean chili.

Also, good news everyone! I found my poblanos. But it's good to know that I can use anaheims in a pinch. Thanks.

And @chickpea, that is a great chart. Thanks for sharing.

You could just use canned green chilis for that too.

Something that might be interesting and easier than jalapenos (I find that they range WIDELY.. if you go for jalapenos don't get them from a mexican market, go buy them from a white people store.. seriously.. they sell different peppers to different markets based on the population buying the peppers. At least they do here in TX.) is green chiles. They usually come in a can, are more consistent, and spice-wise they're not so bad and you can choose how spicy you want.

Chipotles in adobo sauce is pretty consistent as well, and might be a bit spicier than poblanos but have a very smoky heat.

    Mmm, chipotles...

Oh, and if you're following a recipe that calls for ancho peppers, those are just dried poblanos. FYI.
