I have them in living in my wood pile at the moment. Not the giant weta species, but some of them are rather large nonetheless.

Those pics make me almost appreciate winter. But I hate the cold and dark so much that I really can't decide which one is worse.

I'm guessing this is another one of those things that evolved to fill the gap in the ecosystem caused by the lack of mammals.

You are well informed of the NZ ecosystem, my friend. :)

Trust me, it's not common to come across those huge wetas. Most are only slightly larger than crickets - and there are different species involved.
