Default DO you plan your dinners

or open the fridge that night and decide what to make on the spot? and why? I prefer to plan my meals, because so many times I've wanted to make something and didn't have the stuff this way I know exactly what I'm making and only make one trip to the store a week.

Absolutely. I make the menus for 2 weeks at a time. Since we buy our meat in bulk (half a cow, half a pig and chickens) I don't usually have to shop with any of that in mind. I do use seasonal produce and local items whenever I can. There are a couple websites I like for menu planning and ideas.

http://www.myrecipes.com/ This one has menus and you can make your own for planing. You enter your zip code and it gives you sale items as well.

http://www.foodonthetable.com/ I like this place even better.
I like to rock n' roll all night and *part* of every day. I usually have errands... I can only rock from like 1-3.

I rarely plan meals beyond just making sure I eat a balanced diet. Mostly I just eat whatever is easy to make and happen to have on hand. I would like to do a little more meal planning than I have been so that I can have the ingredients available to make a wider variety of things. But I'm not planning to be one of those who has every meal planned for the rest of the week. I like some spontaneity.

I plan them some hours before...I don't like to plan them more than that. It feels stifling.

Depends. When my son is with me, I try to plan ahead including contingency meals in case he's invited friends for dinner (which happens often). When I'm only cooking for myself, most often, no planning.

I try to, yes. It's harder to do it and be inspired to do it super often while living alone, but I've always wanted to eat as healthy as possible and have balanced meals, etc. Plus tastes WAY better than prepackaged things. It probably helps that I grew up having homemade meals every day, and we never really went the fast-food/microwave-dinner route.

But yeah, generally I aim to cook at least one nice meal a week (but am wanting to shift that to 2 meals a week), which leaves me with 2-3 nights of leftovers for each meal. For the other nights, I have enough items -- heaps of spices, baking goods, and staples like lentils, rice, pasta -- that for the non-full-fledged-meal nights, I can easily throw something together that is healthy. I also try to ensure I have a fresh veggie or salad fixings available for each meal.

    (Grocery shop every 1-2 weeks).

I just keep a lot of fresh veggies, bread and soup bases on hand. I make a lot of salads and soups.

Maybe that counts as prior planning.
