This is kind of a reverse grocery list, actually -- itemizing what I have in my fridge and brainstorming what to do with it.

Photo is easier than typing it out on my phone.

Any ideas for the remaining ingredients would be appreciated!

I'm not sure where else to put this.. but it's seriously baffling me when people say healthier food "costs more" than cheap, shitty, processed junkfood (tv dinners, pizzas, chips, deli meats, etc).

For about $30 at the local supermarket (not Whole Foods or whatever the hell), I just came home with the following:

-huge thing of fresh kale (which keeps for fucking ever/is versatile in meals) $1.49
- 18-pack of eggs for 89 cents (sale, usually they're $1.29)
-bag of frozen/vacuum sealed salmon fillets, about 8 of them, $6.99
- about 4 lb of chicken breasts for under $5
- bag of sweet potatoes, about 10, for $2.49
- whole wheat tortillas, 8 pack for $1.50
- 4 mangoes, 69 cents each
- blueberry Greek yogurt, 6 pack $3
- shredded nonfat cheddar cheese, $1.99
- huge container of spring mix leafy greens, $4

I've bought frozen dinners & crap food with the same amount of money & come out with so much less. Few months back, I was super busy/tired/ didn't want to cook/create dishes I'd have to deal with, so I resorted to shopping poorly/getting microwave dinners, etc. Huge waste of money.

Either the grocery stores around here have really decent prices, or.. I don't know. Everywhere I've lived, I've found healthier food you prep at home to be the cheaper option. And upon reflection, the food prep time is usually under 15 mins. And washing dishes isn't that hard.

I feel like no matter how I phrase this, it's going to come off as pretentious in some way. That's not my intention. Just sharing my own experiences. I wasted more money on crappy frozen dinners (even the ones marketed as 'healthier'), & had less energy. Kinda sets up a vicious cycle.

Whole Foods was selling mangoes at 2 for $6, but they were huge mangoes, like ostrich egg-sized mangoes.

Vons was selling chicken breasts at $3.49/lb and an 18 egg carton for $1.88. Sweet potatoes were about $1/lb.

Wow, didn't know any that large existed! I may need to buy one strictly for the novelty. The Whole Foods around here is almost 2x the cost of the local grocery store. Trader Joe's prices are decent, but it's on the other side of town, so I don't go too often.

Yeah, the bag of sweet potatoes on my list was a 3lb bag, just checked. Seems similar.

Von's was hit or miss with prices, when I was in CA. The loyalty card discount helps. Ralph's was a bit better.
One thing I can't wait to get at Von's again, though.. on rare occasion, if I was awake right when they opened at 6am, I'd get a fresh yeast-raised doughnut from their bakery section, lightly dusted with granulated sugar. Still warm. Was like a fluffy, slightly sweet, pillowy bread to accompany my coffee. Not a big doughnut person, generally, but my god, those were good. Try at your own risk, sometime, if you're up early enough.

Bought a 32oz bottle of kefir today, since I'm on antibiotics (Cipro) right now. Never had it before. Thought it'd be like a yogurt smoothie, but it's fizzy, and more... sour. Ehhh. The probiotics had better be worth it.

That is the point of view I was trying to make in another thread. In my country during summer you can get even over 15 punds of various vegetables for only one Big MacMenu.
While 150 grams of good chips costs about 2$ and fruit/vegetables is much cheaper than that. Even chicken breast or cheaper forms of fish are cheaper than many snacks/sweets.

It is all just a matter of habit more or less.
