Quite so. However, there are some restaurants specialised for the healthy eating and with such I'd probably be able to find dishes that bear a good lack of sugar.

You'd think, right? But no. They'll sneakily sweeten foods with "natural" fruit juice, honey, agave, stevia, etc. Unless you can see the ingredients.

I don't know if you're just trying to cut down on the refined white stuff, or if you're in my boat - and trying to make any sweet taste buds whatsoever atrophy.

I believe I take my limits against all carbs except indigestible fibres. Not about the taste but rather about what is eaten.

Almonds are a good snack to pick up.

I know! It really seems like it sometimes. I think it's mainly because the sweet taste is what sells more. And our culture is aaaaaalllll about maximizing profits.

People who sell food just want to sell as much as possible. So whether they're aware of what it comes down to or not, they've discovered that people will buy more, eat more, and come back for more of the foods that have lots of sugar, salt, and fat in them. Our bodies are naturally addicted to those flavors. The more those ingredients are piled into the food we eat, the more addicted we become to them.

Same goes for processed foods. They're addictive because they're easy to digest, and leave you hungry again shortly after eating them. But they are easy to store and highly profitable, so the stores want to sell as much of them as possible, and we easily become addicted to them.

The only way to break the addiction is to eat healthy food, and wake up your taste buds to flavors beyond the basic addictive flavors in sugar, salt, and fat.

Paleo is a great way to do it!

Oh, and another thing to look into is the Zone. There's no need to get strict about it (unless you really get into it and want to), but the basic idea is to balance out protein, carbs, and fat. It isn't as important as eating paleo, but the ideal would be to do both, or to just make sure you're not too far off balance.

update: still haven't touched candy or junk (6 days now) with surprisingly mild cravngs. I've been after the Panda Express orange chicken more than anything - that tells me that they're putting some serious shit in there that I'm right to avoid.

But paleo is a no-no for me...too high protein. Honestly I don't do well on animal protein at all, even though I'm eating the organic stuff. It's triggering joint pain (knees and lower back - I'm fucking 21 for fuck's sake). I do better vegan, so I'll allow fruits, legumes and gluten-free grains again.

Since I ate a fruit salad and lentil soup, my head feels clearer. Paleo was making me mildly depressed and absentminded. Imagine a chronically but mildly suicidal INTP.

    yeah...

Paleo isn't necessarily high protein. Paleo just means eating stuff that's very natural and unprocessed. And if you've broken your cravings for sweets and processed carbs, you might be ready for some natural carbs like those found in fruits and beans.

Most important, though, is to add lots of veggies. They have more nutrients than anything else. Veggies are the healthiest kind of carbs you can possibly get.

thanks...yeah, veggies never go out of style, eh? Lol

And I'm absolutely finished with Paleo. I literally just sat down right now after vomiting in the toilet (nausea induced, not finger induced). It was those deviled eggs...I hope this diet didn't give me cancer.

    @mrcockburn
So you're giving up on natural food now because you OD'd on eggs?

But yikes, hope you find a balance and feel better soon.... You're prob'ly right that high protein (not paleo) is a bad idea for you.

How about a balanced diet of natural, healthy foods, without ODing on one particular thing?

I had only six devilled egg halves! And I have to stuff myself with diet-permitted yummy food, otherwise I crave things. Maybe the eggs had salmonella.
