Thinking

There are three steps to thinking.

The first is we learn our spoken culture at home.
The second is we go to school to become literate, and to discover the world of literacy, from literature itself to science and everything in between.
The third is we learn to think critically about our given culture.

The third is an acquired taste, and once we have acquired the taste, we have a permanent itch to scratch.

Very few of us acquire the taste, for the good reason that it precipitates cognitive dissonance, which is emotionally painful. However it is like the pain of using an unused muscle, and after a while we start to enjoy the exercise.

Unfortunately popular American culture is anti-intellectual and rejects critical thinking.
