Sounds to me like they're an authoritarian regime with crony capitalism and some socialist trappings.

This is a gas station masquerading as a country. I don't think they are socialist, they never were, just like they were never really Marxists or Leninists or anything of the sort.
I like to rock n' roll all night and *part* of every day. I usually have errands... I can only rock from like 1-3.

Imo, authoritariansim and socialism go hand in hand. The resistance to calling Russia socialist is due to the push to make America more socialist, and the liberals don't want "socialism" to be associated with such a crappy place. Cause when they say socialism, they don't mean that socialism. They mean the good kind.

I think maybe the government promises/campaigns to be one way, and what the people get is something else?

Did it look like wild, unregulated (laissez-faire) capitalism? Or was it actually wild, unregulated (laissez-faire) capitalism?

It's true that most of the state farms have dissolved. But those were communal. There is top-down control just as there was during the Cold War when everybody was pretending that the workers were running the show. Private ownership means nothing when big government is telling you what to do by micro-managing everything.

It was crony capitalism, but not anymore. The government (Putin) runs the show.

I saw it up close. It was wild capitalism.

It depends on what year you're talking about. But I think you mean anarcho-capitalism.
