I argue with myself every moment of everyday.

It's just how my brains manifests it's thinking process-I think. Either way I don't care; it works for me.

If you're knocking at the door to your unconscious and there is no answer back, some dreadful pressure about to burst is not far away:

Someone's going to open that door and go down there, or that door is going fly off its hinges. Either way, social evolution will not be cheated of its rhythm and it's going to get sloppy. We all know it. We all walk around with that instinctive understanding in our unconscious minds.

I get the impression that the saying is meant to be ironic. It's aware that most people do it and is mildly teasing that part of human nature.
