    I wouldn't have the best answer for this, but probably just going got context of the situation, reading the other person's body language, and their own experience.

    Same way you recognise a tree as a tree, you compare it to previous affirmed experiences and use some inductive logic.

    Just look at facial expression, body language, tone of voice etc, use what you already know about them, idk doesn't everyone naturally try to/do this anyway though?

    Not everyone. But yes that's what I do as well.

    i try my hardest not to get hung up on motives and focus on what's said and done. sometimes intention is clear to me, and that's good to be aware of, but i really prefer to deal with concrete communication.
    You hem me in -- behind and before;
    you have laid your hand upon me.
    Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
    too lofty for me to attain.

    If it sounds like bullshit, ask a bunch of follow-up questions. If they have a whole story perfectly weaved together and the pieces all logically fit, it's probable they're not lying.

    I don't really try... It literally just happens. It honestly is super creepy that I can read people a bit TOO well... It creeps me out so much. I am trying to decide if I'm sane or just perceptive. This is going a little off topic but wjen i was in fourth grade i tried out for an acting evaluation and i played a role where i was a depressed teenager and the evaluator literally said "dont change yourself. You are unique. Keep acting and you will go far." that literally still affects me today. I changed myself and I quit acting. That has affected me so much... I quit acti g because I was super shy and hated being on stage... So yeah. Don't judge
    "...Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
    I doubted if I should ever come back.
    I shall be telling this with a sigh
    Somewhere ages and ages hence:
    Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
    I took the one less traveled by,
    And that has made all the difference."
