Analyzing humor - Which of these jokes tickle your funny bone and why?

1. My girlfriend mixed up the phone number for her dentist with the number for her gynecologist. Now her vagina has teeth and her breath smells like fish.

Eh, just didn't find it funny. Imagery I got was more 'uhh, ew."

2. Next time someone asks you how youre doing say "I was better before the murders. Who knew anger management was so unreliable when I skip my meds. Oh well. Did you want to get together in that abandoned warehouse on 5th and 81st? I go there after dark sometimes. If your free, then please, come alone, dont tell anyone, and NO COPS

Potential to be very funny but it was drawn out too long. Would be more funny to have a series of these with one line answers of this nature to the question.

3. Having sex once a week can improve your immune function by 30 percent. I told my wife "My immune system's low. Assume the position." She said "Youre sick" I said "No but I could be. Bend please. Quick. The sniffles must be stopped"

Also would be funny if it wasn't drawn out so long, and the whole thing seems too childish to suspend belief, unless they're doing a cosplay or something xD

4. Having a bottomless pit can make you hungry. Having a topless fruit can get you arrested.

Eh? Maybe I don't fully get this one. There's not enough of a parallel here.

5. I got a dog for my grandmother. That seems like a fair trade.

This one's funny. Just the essentials and great playing on the interpretations of it, and in the Goldilock's Zone of Irreverence. It's still kind of common though.

6. I asked my wife "Are you free tonite?" She said "No its gonna cost you"

This one I found funny too, exact commentary for #5 applies.

7. I am trying to teach my dog some tricks but she keeps dropping the cards

Kind of a mildly amusing forced laugh sort of thing. Might work as a kids joke.

8. My watchdog just watched a burgler take the stereo.

Somehow it just didn't strike me as funny but I think it has hope if reformatted.

9. My wife said "I love you" I thought that was sweet. Turns out I was right. She was talking to the chocolate cake.

Very mildly amusing, doesn't have a good flow because 'sweet' refers to the words of affection rather than the object of it.

10. Hey did you get her number? Yes I did. Well what is it? Six. What is six? How many times she sad no !

Mildly amusing. Would be funnier to me if it was more like,

"I finally got her number for"
"I'm.... shocked. Well, where is it?"
"Her number is 6, the amount of times I was able to ask her for her number before she walked away."

11. I had a minor accident in the car that left skid marks. What on the road? No in my shorts!

Not a fan of most body function jokes. Also, the fact that the accident is in the car already rather than with the car kind of ruins it.

12. You might be lonely if you travel just for the airport pat down

This was kind of funny, in that irreverent-bittersweet "Forever Alone" sort of way.

13. Indian girl asks the chief "how do you come up with our indian names?" Chief says when you're born we run out of the tee pee and the first thing we see, thats your name. She says "thank you chief buffalo chip" He says "No problem two dogs humping"

Mildly amusing.... too expected.

14. My buddy told me he got kicked out of of the hotel for peeing in the pool. I said "whats the big deal, lots of kids pee in the pool." He said "from the fourteenth floor?"

Doesn't strike me funny. Fourteenth floor is overkill, just the fact of him not being in the pool while he was peeing in it would've been mildly amusing.

15. You might be lonely if you ever played leap frog with a unicorn and hoped for an accident

Same as #12, but imagining how pointy a unicorns horn would probably be semi-ruined it for me.

16. My dentist asked me if I wanted my cavity filled. I say yes of course. So he spun me around and shoved a dildo in my ass.

Potential to be very funny if it were more subtle, as I already know exactly where this joke is going as soon as I read the word "cavity." The irreverence is a little too high with the combination of the bluntness of the ending (no pun initially intended) and the professional atmosphere of a dentist's office. Maybe redeemable if the punchline were "As I waddled home that evening I remembered that 'Serving Up Smiles' was also the name of the new brothel" Or something like that...

I didn't really find any of them funny. A lot of the delivery seemed awkward to me.

2 was prolly the only one that would make me laugh IRL, and It could easily be ruined by the detail it goes into. (Trying too hard). 14 if it was said dry and matter of fact. The rest could be cute, except #1. I like crude but in a different way.

Gonna jump on the "not my style of humour" train. Not a lot of one liners do it for me (Anthony Jeselnik is a comedian with some fairly funny dark one liners, but even though I find his more skillful and funny than these in general, he's not one of my favorites, and a lot of his humour is bolstered by the character he creates).

Rather, I like longer bits or examinations into things that poke, prod and analyze an individual idea. I like satire. Sometimes I like absurdism, if done right. I often like dry or slightly uncomfortable humour. Jokes that are crude, violent or gross for no other reason than to be those things don't amuse me. Puns also rarely tickle me, unless they are very clever or subtle.

Essentially, these jokes are probably too alike to be very useful if you're trying to look at humour on any meaningful level. It feels like you're analyzing taste in music, but only presenting jazz pieces to the people you are surveying. And while some people may disagree, I believe humour and sense of humour is every bit as diverse as the world of music.

All these jokes work well live and about three times as well with extroverts since introverts are less willing to let things go, getting lost in the analysis of words and concepts at play in the joke. One one liner after another is tiresome live. Longer bits work much better live in a standup situation.

Introverts seem to be more apt to

1. Take offense at vulgarity even though numerous studies show over 50% of commercial humor has some level of explicit sexual overtones or sexual innuendo including that on prime time television.

2. Get caught up in examining grammatical errors however intentional, despite its necessary employ in humor

3. Get caught up in examing logical flaws despite their necessity for humor mechanisms

4. Get caught up in examing the joke mechanics

5. Intros tend to jump up on the soapbox more often for dark humor than extroverts do when criticizing humor even though several introverts love dark humor even to the point of enjoying dark humor exclusively.

Extroverts tend to give a pass on all matters 1 thru 5 above more often for the sake of a laugh.

I was going to do an analysis on these jokes, but I got bored. Most of them are too Andrew Dice Clay for me, and the others are very Catskills stand up. I'm not a huge fan of most stand-up, or just stand alone jokes. I tend to find more humor in story based situations.

That seemed to be a more objective analysis, without reading too much into the data. (It's easier to say who thought the humor was funny, vs making up reasons as to why or why not they liked it as the other analysis did.)

Note that while I did state some of the jokes were funny, it has no bearing on whether I prefer this type of humor vs other types, or whether I thought an actual comedy routine should have more variety. I considered each joke on its own terms and why it might work or not work on its own. (I also can laugh at many different styles of humor besides this.)
