Why Do Some People Take Pride in Being a [any negative expletive]?

Out of all people, I chose to look up Dustin Diamond. This is just out of pure curiosity. For example saying things like "I know I'm a dick... deal with it." What's the purpose of going out of your way to be one?

I think some people really don't care how others feel about anything or how they may or may not be impacting the feelings of others with their actions. You can't really tell someone else how they should behave, but it should be obvious that if one is going to behave like a "dick" others are going to return the favor - so it has always perplexed me when people that treat other people like crap get surprised when other people feel inclined to treat them like crap in return.

So if someone really doesn't care how they treat people and they don't really care how others treat them in response - I really have a hard time making an argument for why they shouldn't behave that way - if that is how they truly wish to behave (these things are always so subjective)... but it's really easy (at least in my opinion) to take offense to the hypocritical "dick"... that's just annoying.

This is all quite interesting. The reason why I wondered about this is because I looked up the actor who played "Screech" on Saved by the Bell and he wrote a book and pretty much bad-mouthed all his co-stars (he was a dud in the adult film industry while his co-stars went on to become fairly successful). Plus, he was like the person that everyone hated on Celebrity Fit Club. It's like he reveled in being a [negative expletive]. Then, I was wondering why do people end up like that, in general. This brings us to the thread. P.S. I don't really care about Saved By the Bell.... I just thought this topic was interesting.

It could be a case of any attention is good attention, particularly in the business that he's in or was in, whichever the case may be. Just taking a guess though.

well, some people just accept who they are seen as and would rather not go out of their way to try to appeal to others or change themselves for other people. Especially people they either don't know or otherwise don't respect.

I think about this every time I hear someone announcing how much of a bitch they are and how proud they are to be one. Why would you like being called a bitch? Why do you want to be a bitch? It just reads as a sorry coping mechanism to me.

i agree with those who think it's often a power thing. being a [****] indicates that you don't need or want anyone's approval, and that you wield enough influence to be able to mess with their lives.

Yeah that guy wound up gettting involved in porn and a load of things like that too, a kind of deliberate assault upon the popular image of him as an inoffensive college geek.

Its a good question, I think that there are elements of it in Ayn Rand, Ann Coulter, and politics aswell as social life, sometimes I think its because people dont like, and choose to rebel against, the definitions of what being an idiot is when they believe that it has been invented or created by a different group of idiots, sometimes its a thrill or attention/attachment seeking.

I would add to all of this that when someone calls themselves a dick they think that the blunt words that they use are truthful in describing whomever they are being told too. They are a dick because they speak the "truth".

It's rationalization and justification of poor behavior.
It's easier to be a narcissistic, self absorbed and a self centered jerk than it is not to be.
It's easier to tell someone what to accept about you than it is to be objective and accept what they say about you.
It's easier to stagnate than it is to grow.
It's just a person who is mentally lazy and emotionally retarded.

It's pure narcissism. Anyone who self-affirms that they are a dick or a bitch is self affirming that they have no social tact, and probably little or no restraint. Their life experience and opinions are so awesome and great and better than yours that it gives them free reign to act as reprehensible as they please.

People become so wrapped up in themselves that they state their opinions as truths drives me insane.

Ugh, these types sound like all those mutants on Jersey Shore.
