Relationships have normal ebbs and flows. They do not automatically get better and better when the participants learn more and more about each other. Instead, the participants have to work through the tensions of the relationship (the dialectic) while they learn and group themselves and a parties in a relationships. At times the relationships is very open and sharing. Other time, one or both parties to the relationship need their space, or have other concerns, and the relationship is less open. The theory posits that these cycles occur throughout the life of the relationship as the persons try to balance their needs for privacy and open relationship.

It's subjective, except in extreme cases where someone pisses off everyone. Though there will probably still be another person who likes this and wants to piss off everyone with them.

Being real, tempered with discretion - you show vulnerability, but in appropriate and reciprocal increments. Inappropriate amounts of information in proportion to acquaintance indicates insecurity or lack of judgement. No disclosure keeps people at a distance (and also shows insecurity, but presents in a stronger way).

Having enough personal confidence to have margin left over to focus on other people and concentrate on valuing them.

Having a sense of dignity that does not call in weaponry unnecessarily, but that also draws clear boundaries. People take their cues for how to assign value according to how you assign value to yourself.

People don't want it up front. They say they do, but they don't. It's better to be underwhelming that overwhelming.
