I would say because society inherently values humility whether it is genuine or not. This is due to the (false) belief that an individual cannot benefit from humility; it is seen a sacrifice, just as charity is perceived to be, even when it is self-serving.

In contrast, confidence is seen as a personal indulgence, which must be viewed with suspicion.
Exactly. Normally, one never expects the humble man to screw you over.

    By humiliating you mean humble?

Confidently humble is where you know when to be humble and when punching that asshole in the face is a good idea. You also know your strengths and weaknesses well enough to keep from getting too proud or too depressed.

That doesnt sound humble to me, sounds more like a person who thinks to be impeccable, as in: knowing when to be humble and when not lol

No I meant confidently humiliated, as in getting more confident with every punch in the face

Depends on the day, some days I'm down with it, other days, yeah, it can bug me a lot.

Why do people assume confidence is fake, and humility is real?
    Interesting question.

Often times, confidence is exhibited, but never realized. For instance, a guy starts actling like a douchebag to a girl at a bar, another fellow steps up and tells the aggressor to chill out. The "white knight" exhibited confidence, but did not have to engage in a physical altercation to prove his confidence was indeed genuine.

Humility is accepted as genuine upon presentation alone. If someone appears humble, then most assume that is the way of them, but in a different environment, that humility could be non-existent because there isn't something around that represses bravado.

    Does that make any sense?

To me, actions speak louder than words.

People only see want the want to see. They believe that the things that they want to be real are actually real, to some point. If you want someone to be something, then they usually are that something in your eyes without even really being it. Moreover, we want other people to show humility, because it makes us feel better. So we believe that confident people are only faking their confidence and that people who show humility aren't faking their humility.
I was sitting outside the classroom waiting to go in, and I saw an airplane hit the tower. The TV was obviously on. I used to fly myself and I said, "There's one terrible pilot."
