I would like to make the disclaimer that I make no propaganda against homosexuals with this thread. I only seek to understand why some people would do as explained in the following:

Some straight acquaintances I personally know enjoy "mooning" one another so much so that they did it for an hour while camping in the middle of nowhere. Keep in mind these are all males. I may understand the humor in a single mooning with clever timing, but for an entire hour? They find humor in acting like such towards one another all the time. They have sent pictures of their own genitalia to one another to incite a laugh. I fear one day the "playful bickering" will escalate up to anal sex, with the recipient shouting, "oh man, you got me good!"

I inquired about it once. One of them explained, "Well, if you were comfortable with your sexuality you wouldn't mind."

I then responded, "I am comfortable, which is why I don't feel the need to verify/validate like you do."

Where does this come from? Why do (seemingly) straight males act this way towards one another?

Psychologically, it could just be the breaking of social taboo in ritualized manner that stimulates the behavior.

If one wants to get into evolutionary style behavior, aren't some monkey species prone to displaying genitalia as part of social games? Maybe it's just innate.

^^ Ne style speculations, left for others to confirm or deny...

To be honest.

I think no one is 100% straight (or a 100% homosexual for that matter).

It's a conscious choice one makes his/her preference. When that choice is made and secured. It doesn't really matter what you do anymore.

Mooning other guys for long periods of time as a straight guy could very well be just for sake of humor. Or mockery. I don't know, it might differ from person to person. But I don't think it's because they need to solidify their sexuality. Since that's a choice they make.

I consider myself straight for relationships and overall sexuality. I'm particularly drawn to women. But I know from experience I am not incapable of enjoying sexuality with other guys, which makes me BI. The main thought process that governs this is what I want from it in the end. Which turns out to be girls, so I'm straight with a BI edge.

But for years I believed to be 100% straight. Until I just opened my mind to the possibility and started to ponder about it.

Now, if you're taught to be repulsed by homosexuality in your own mind or by others. You'll no doubt believe you are 100% straight and will likely not change your mind. Essentially making you straight. But believe you me, that should you open up for it, you totally got gay potential.

I think everyone does. :D

So their actions reflect either an inner desire for social rebellion or to better achieve harmony within society? An "id vs super-ego," then?

So what I'm construing as unusual behavior is just a digression in humor?

To bond over how heterosexual they are, I guess. Ever watch Jackass? (This behavior to the extreme.)

Well, it may depend on the individual..

The only reason I would do such a thing is for the sake of (lame) humor though. And most likely boozed up a bit as well. :p

to be honest I don't think sexual preference is a choice. I think I'd make a better lesbian then a straight chick, honestly. I suck at being straight, yet I'm attracted to men, and I could never be with another woman long term, I could do flings no problem.

Well, a it's not the kind of choice one easily changes. What I'm saying is that everyone has the potential to be physically attracted to either sex. For many different reasons. But ultimatly, our choice on how we wish to spend the rest of our lives. What our expectations are of a relationship, and such. Is what defines our sexuality.

So, it's not as much a choice as in 'I want to be this or I want to be that.'. But rather a huge train of thought about all aspects of what is important to us in a relationship that defines our eventual preference.

So, sort of a choice. :) If you understand my point.

I do not believe it's a choice. I believe that we are all born the way we are. Because really, I don't think that my brother ever wanted to be yelled at and told he's going to burn in hell by our priest and I don't think he ever wanted to be hated by our father. It's who he is. He has tried to date girls before, but he just doesn't care for them. It's who he is and he cannot change who he is attracted to.

Oh, and going back to the OP. Maybe that's their idea of humor. Genitalia and whatnot.

The choices we make can help to form our ideals of beauty, but I don't believe anyone directly chooses whom they're attracted to. Attraction is normally spontaneous: it comes on you all at once, without your consent, and you do with it what you will. But that's a whole separate issue from what this thread is about. I think there are a lot plausible explanations for why straight males feign homosexuality. The most obvious one is that they have elements of homosexuality in them, and rather than bottle these up and hide them, they choose to throw them out in the open and make light of them. In this way, they can disown and discredit these feelings: these feelings are not to be taken seriously, they're just a joke that we're all in on. On that same vein, I think these behaviors serve a bonding purpose. Not only is it a sexual behavior (sexual behavior always containing a bonding element) but it gets people laughing and makes them feel that they've shared, and therefore soothed, an insecurity.

Vulgarity is part of low culture.

And low culture can best be understood in relation to high culture.

High culture sets us free while low culture diminishes us.

Low culture is extremely profitable. So it is no surprise it is extremely popular.

And if you want to be popular, if you want to belong, you adopt the manners and mores of low culture.

So low culture is piped at us from every direction - from television, from the pop music industry, from the pornography industry, from the drug industry and from youth culture.

Low culture is big business.

But at its heart is a hatred of high culture.

At its heart low culture harbours a deep ressentiment towards high culture, and so takes every opportunity to birsmirch it.

The constant and never ending reference to, "Ass", here, and now a whole thread devoted to, "Ass", demonstrate the passion to dirty high culture.

Low culture knows it is dirty, it even thinks sexuality is dirty, so it is on a compulsive and never ending quest to make high culture as dirty as itself.

And how successful it has been.

I've got some friends that do the same exact thing. They're also homophobic to the core. I don't know what it is, they don't even talk about girls. Maybe they're afraid of themselves.

i see no problem of mooning one another for however long you want. i mean if they want to do it, then what's the problem? it's in the middle of nowhere, who's going to get bothered?

personally i'm almost careless of a person's gender, and i think it should be of the least concern to anyone what another person's gender or sexuality is. i'd even go so far as to say that i would consider both males and females for a platonic relationship.

both genders essentially come from the same asexual being, and differ only on their dominant hormones. this serves as reason enough for me to believe in equality between genders and in that you should be able to love whoever you want to love. it also serves as enough reason that e.g. gender transsexualism is rather superficial, but that is entire another topic.

my point to all of this is: what does it matter? i see it as playful behavior between males, why does it have to have a deeper meaning? it could be that some of them are homosexual, it could also be that they just don't care. in either case, it's nobody's business.

I was fairly bothered by it. Both by the awkwardness of it and that the time frame was between 2-3 am, when I was trying to sleep.

Nothing has to have a deeper meaning. Nothing has to matter. Their business doesn't have to be of concern to people. But the purpose of the post is to put meaning, matter, and concern into the situation, much like any other post on TypeC. It'd be uninteresting to assume a neutral stance.

it was your choice to go with them in the first place, wasn't it?

any thread where a neutral stance is possible is uninteresting from the beginning. i see no point in the creation of this one other than to rant.

It absolutely was my conscience choice to do so. Though I am confident enough to claim my intuition is well-developed, I cannot do the same regarding actual divination.

When you refer to the "point of creation," do you speak of your intent or mine?

And back to the original topic:
To sum up your rendition of events transpired, this was normal male behavior?

From mooning to spooning? Like...

A: *moon*
B: *moons back*
A: Oh yeah? Take this! *jumbo moon*
B: That's hilarious! But... *super moon with pants at the ankles*
A: ?!?!
B: What? Hey, you're facing the wrong way! We'll see about that! *THAT'S NO MOON! THAT'S A...*
A: !!!!
B: Ouch! Hey, what?! Get that outta there!
A: *huff, huff, grunt*
B: *sigh*
A: I got you good, bro!

I'm not sure, if you take a video camera on the next camping trip, will that make things better or worse?
