Re: 8w7 Sx/Sp Vs. 8w7 Sx/So

Here you go. Although I'm aware this is possibly too late in the day to still have a point.

I've compiled the profile of both from Tim Condon's Fine Distinctions, and Beatrice Chestnut's The Instinctual Subtype Dimension of the Enneagram. The part that differs between the two is bolded.

Enneagram Type Eight-wing-Seven with a Sexual/Self-Preservation Stacking:

Gregarious and generous; can display a cheerful, sunny bravado. May be forceful but with a light touch. Often funny and have a sense of humor about themselves. Sometimes driven to bring the new into being and willing to take risks to make that happen. The realm of tycoons or high-profile social reformers who overhaul a system to make it more just. Can be good at seeing options, being flexible and strategic in the exercise of power or achieving a goal. Eights with a Seven-wing are the most openly aggressive of all the subtypes because each component types is aggressive—Eights in their quest for power and Sevens in their acquisition of experiences and possessions. They take the initiative almost all the time—from business deals to romantic engagements—with great gusto and confidence of success. The healthy Eight's charisma combines with the healthy Seven's capacity to enjoy life, producing an extraordinarily outgoing personality whose inner strength and vitality may be so outstanding as to allow Eights with a Seven-wing to have a public, and possibly historical, impact. They have a strong business sense, are highly extroverted, and possess an enormous drive which they pour into their work, interests, and adventures. These are robust, earthy, and materialistic people whose feet are firmly planted on the ground.
Boxer-poets; people who have a paradoxical combination of aggression and sensitivity. A nuanced ironic intelligence, especially about relationships. Can see a close relationship as a mutual pact of protection in a dangerous world. Test their partner’s motives and fortitude by being paradoxically tough and aggressive. Similar to the practice of “hazing” new members in an American fraternity. Sexual Eights can express love so implicitly that their partner doesn’t know it. Could casually give a gift that they have poured their heart into, but do so in such a casual way that it seems to mean nothing. Sexual Eights have a strong antisocial tendency. People with this subtype are provocative people who express lust through open rebellion—through declaring in word and deed that their values differ from the norm. This outspoken, rebellious Eight likes to be seen as bad—or at least they don't mind it—and they tend not to feel any guilt over the rebellious things they do. The name given to the Sexual Eight is “Possession”, which refers to a kind of charismatic taking over (or dominance) of the whole environment—an energetic capture of people's attention. These Eights display the idea of “Possession” in that they can take over a whole scene energetically, becoming the center of things. In getting and maintaining this power, Sexual Eights can be fascinating and charismatic. Their power comes through a kind of seductiveness and intensity that differentiates them stylistically from the other two Eight subtypes. Often see the world as a place where they have to fight for whatever they have. Self-preservation Eights can be implacably determined to prosper. Momma Bear or Poppa Bear; both fiercely protective and tenderly nurturing. This subtype is also evident in the behavior of tycoons, self-made men and women who create business empires out of nothing. Self-Preservation Eights feel compelled to go after what they need very directly without talking about it much—they know how to get things done without a lot of fuss or explanations. These people are the least expressive of the three Eight subtypes: they don’t talk much and they don’t reveal much. This is a no-nonsense person who doesn’t bother with pretenses. Self-Preservation Eights are preoccupied with getting things—and getting away with things. The Self-Preservation Eight is the most “armed” and protected of all of the Eights—this is a more Five-ish Eight. They tend to possess a quiet strength; they are survivors who communicate strength without feeling the need to explain themselves. This stacking is very charismatic. They have a very assertive energy and they demand attention. The lust of the Eight combines with the sexual instinct to make one of the most fiery of the combinations of all of the enneatypes, especially if Seven is the dominant wing. Sexual/Self-preservation Eights aren’t afraid to tell you what they think. The "can do" attitude is now intertwined with an outward passionate storm of energy.

In getting and maintaining this power, Sexual Eights can be fascinating and charismatic. Their power comes through a kind of seductiveness and intensity that differentiates them stylistically from the other two Eight subtypes. The group’s welfare and cohesion are important to them. To this end, they are often cooperative, seeking positive solutions and open to feedback. Honest about their faults and hold themselves accountable to others. Can be bold, audacious or progressive in the service of changing a system so that it becomes more socially just. Some suffer from “eldest child syndrome,” feeling responsible for younger siblings while compensating for inadequate or distant parents. The group the Eight protects could be family, friends, coworkers. Or stray animals, abused children, misfit teenagers or the small and inarticulate—those who can’t advocate on their own behalf. Members of the group represent the Eight’s vulnerabilities and that’s what the Eight is essentially protecting. Friendless protector of others, alone in the middle of a group. They can’t receive well, and don’t expect to be given to or believe anyone will notice when they need something. This person is "social antisocial." In contrast to Self-Preservation Eights, Social Eights are more loyal, more overtly friendly, and less aggressive. They are helpful Eights-people who are nurturing, protective, and concerned with the injustices that happen to people—yet they also display an antisocial aspect with regard to the rules of society. This stacking of Eight manifests as the alpha male and alpha female. They demand everyone's attention, and usually get it. They can be very charismatic. The assertive energy of the Eight combines with the assertive energy of the sexual instinct. With the self-preservationist instinct least developed, this stacking has a lot of extroverted energy. This stacking isn’t afraid to go after what they want in life.
