Default Type 4 or Type 9?

    Hi all,

I have taken multiple Enneagram tests throughout the years and am confused because I end up being typed as a 4 and a 9. I have asked family and friends to read the descriptions of 4's and 9's and I get the same results - some say I'm definitely a 4 and others say I'm a for sure a 9. I have always wondered what my true type is since I hear that you can only really be one type.

Is this a common mistype? Would someone please help me figure this out once and for all? I look forward to hearing from you all. Take care!

To compensate for being out of touch with their instinctual energies, Nines also retreat into their minds and their emotional fantasies. (This is why Nines can sometimes misidentify themselves as Fives and Sevens, “head types,” or as Twos and Fours, “feeling types.”)
Yep, it's a common mistype. I sometimes come really close to testing as a Two myself.

The way you deal with unpleasant feelings should tell you: 4s delve into emotion; 9s detach from emotion. 4s delve into whatever upsets them; 9s detach from whatever upsets them.

I'm wondering if this explains how I deal with some of the people from my past... Or I guess I should say...Don't deal with. In the past, say a guy I was dating really hurt me... I would sever all ties to him and it was truly like he never existed when I'd see him out. Now, I could still talk about him if he came up in conversation, but I would never actually talk to him or even acknowledge him if I saw him out.

Thinking my tritype is 5-9-2, not 5-2-9... just switched it

    Yep.

4s also seem to be more on the sensitive/emotional side, whereas 9s seem to be more laid-back and see things from various angles.

My mother had the same confusion, even she score a bit of 5. If your are not sure, and you think you are other types, then you are a 9. My mother's wing solve the thing, she had so much of 1... unhealthy 1. lol
