Enneagram Type 8 - The Challenger

When you scored this, make sure that you're not a really "counterphobic" Type 6 instead and read the type 6 description to see if you relate to it better than to this one.

"Eights are strong-willed rugged streetsmart types who like feeling "grand" about themselves. They are competitive and decisive. They are gluttonous types who like to "live life hard"...like "work hard play hard"..."I want to really sink my teeth into that juicy steak." They delight in seeing themselves as animalistic yet think about things more deeply than they let on. Eights "just know" they have an inherent "gravitas" that most people don't have. They are anything but apologetic for taking up space around them. Others can immediately feel an eight's physical presence from their uninhibited "I am aligned with myself not you" expansiveness that is a reflection of their grand personality. They are naturally confident enough to not need to prove their strength to others or themselves. They simply assume they are both formidable enough and mentally tough enough to do whatever they gotta do, no discussion necessary. As tough as eights seem on the outside, what largely seperates eights from eight-lookalikes is how eights are even tougher from the neck up. They stomach the harsher realities of life that most others find unsettling. They are the least likely type to crack or break down psychologically. While they prefer being independent they know they can lead should they choose to. On the flip side they know deep down they are outsiders who can never fully be "one of the guys"."

You scored:

66% 2
69% 3

62% 5
66% 6

If you have a few scores similarly high to your highest score: This is perfectly normal and you should also read the other descriptions if you want to find out what type you really are.

Thanks for your feedback.

I haven't thought of the questions, but the test is a translation and adapation of a test by the Dutch Enneagram and NLP specialist and researcher Joost van der Leij (who has also done some brain research about Enneagram types). No matter what I think of his questions, I wanted to stay as true to his version as possible. (I haven't got anything to do with him so...just saying. xD)

The question "do you have emotions" is in fact a question for type 3. The inventor of that questionair is a type 3 himself. And I guess he knows what he and other 3s will respond to such a question.

The stress related questions don't point to the type they seem to point to. So the question about bumming around on a sofa OR excessively working a on another activity sound like they might be type 9 related but will infact make you score higher on type 3 since type 9 is their stress point.

If I asked for feelings of defectiveness (which were not in the original questionnair btw.) I am absolutely sure that ALL THE 6s would get extremely high scores on 4!

The questions are supposed to capture a gestalt and not single traits that basically anybody could have. The questions would definitely lack some validity if the latter were the case (they surely do now...but less than otherwise. :p ). So if you are a certain type, you should probably be able to respond agreeingly to such a question with several parts.

I wasn't quite sure about the "at all cost" part. It wasn't there in the beginning which resulted in too many people actually getting 4 as a result. Even my husband - who doesn't have any 4 in him (and who would never think he has), would score high on questions like "Do you want to be spcial and unique?". If you've got a better idea how exactly I could change those questions to really test for type 4, I would be glad to hear them.

As I said: I don't necessarily agree with all the questions of that guy (that's also why I didn't include "When you go to a cinema, do you look for the emergency exit?"). But I still want to keep most questions contentwise (as they're not "my" questions). As for the complaints concerning the improvement of the wording for single questions, I will definitely look into it when I have more time and a better laptop... meaning maybe tonight or tomorrow. I might also add some content that is more along the lines of what some of you think is correct as long as I can find it in van der Leij's texts somewhere. And I might also remove some things if possible.

Hmm, this sort of confirms 5w4, though I didn't expect that equal balance between 4 and 6. The high score on 9 isn't suprising either, MacGuffin had pointed this out to me, ... but how did I end up with such a high result for 1????

On second thought, those are all relatively close together except for 7 and 8. Looks like not-7-or-8 is the only thing I'm for sure :D

Enneagram Type 4 - The Individualist

"Fours are image types who primarily identify with their feelings. They are moody and self-absorbed as well as very sensitive. They are disdainful, hostile even, towards being "normal" or "common". On the deepest of levels they are "different from others" and "true to themselves" and therefore significant, special, and unique. They are honest with themselves about how feelings are central to their lives and unlike twos and threes appear to wear their shame and vulnerability on their sleeve. Whether warranted or not fours attach subjective significance to their feelings from which they strive to create an identity embedded with their own stylistic signature that is their "personal statement" of who they are."

"Sevens are gluttonous fun-loving types who believe in experiencing what they want in life without restrictions or obligations. They want a lot and are gnawed by their wants enough to see them as needs so they "need" that juicy steak and "need" that vacation. They take care of their stuff themselves and aren't a burden on anyone so why shouldn't they be entitled to a good life? These natural optimists have a hard time accepting the stark reality that the world isn't as accomodating as they would like. Being head types they understand that but sevens are sevens so understanding something and coming to grips with something are two different things.Sevens have a blind faith in the future working out for them. Their jumping-the-gun streams of consciousness cause them to distort the future as being just around the corner. If they keep their options open a little longer they are sure to get what they want. They also frequently believe they can have their cake and eat it too. They enthusiastically plan out rosy scenarios in their mind. The future hasn't yet made the details apparent that might show their optimism is misplaced, nor does it make demands on them or slow them down like people in the present do. They feel if they keep moving and anticipating they can stay one step ahead of being bogged down by all that. It goes without saying they don't sweat the small stuff and are always on the lookout for shortcuts that would get them to their happier more fulfilling future faster."

"Fives are intellectually curious types who love to explore what interests them. They frequently indulge in spending lots of time with what's impractical. While they put lots of effort into thinking about things they have deceptively strong feelings however. They state their points dispassionately and insure what they communicate is well thought out which make them seem less emotional than they really are.

Fives take it for granted they have an inherent ability to theorize and understand things more deeply than others, something they'd never say openly. They are never quite "fully there" in their physical presence however. Their sensitivity to emotional stimuli plus a lack of smoothness from their less developed instincts always makes them removed to some degree to better handle situations. They withdraw from their environment and detach emotionally from others to shut out intrusions in their time and space. From the safety of their minds they can intensify their investment in their mental activities. They feel planning sufficiently and knowing enough can enable them to survive and thrive in life despite being isolated. This overuse of their thinking center to navigate an intrusive world from a distance causes them to be both idiosyncratic in how they perceive reality and eccentric as others perceive them. This causes fives to exhibit a certain quirky cleverness."

I scored as a 1, but I have to echo other posters. Some of the questions were either nonsensical (the aforementioned sofa question) or just bizarre (who the hell DOESN'T have emotions?).

Yes, everybody does. ;) Those two are type 3 questions. And they do make perfect sense for type 3. xD

They do make sense for type 3. But they are bad questions that are skewing the results of your test.

Hm? How so?

The type 3 curve is one of the best-looking curves (if not THE best looking one) of the whole test...

How is the emotions question type 3 related?

Type 3 is in the center of the heart triad, type 6 is in the center of the head triad and type 9 is in the center of the gut triad. Type 9 isn't aware of their anger, type 6 isn't aware of their fear and type 3 isn't aware of their emotions. That's the theory.

The "inventor" of the original questionnair is - as I already mentioned - a type 3 himself. He said that when asked this question he would just be at a complete loss about how to answer this question.

So if you can say "Yes, I do have emotions" and it's completely heart-felt then you're probably not a type 3. That's why you get 1 or 2 (not sure atm) minus points for type 3 if you say yes to that question.

Why would 3's have more emotion? I know it's in the "Heart Triad", but why 3? Emotions are more for 2's and 4's.

However, I said "yes" to that question because I'd be a moron not to, since everyone does have emotions. Such as tiredness, stress, anticipation, contentment, irritation (yes NTs, that IS an emotion, nice try).

That q should screen for delusion instead.

EDIT: nm, I saw what you said to that. But are you implying that 3's are morons?

"Are you fully aware of your emotions most of the time?" maybe a bit more accurate. The two-part type questions and "at all costs" with all the qualifiers are the weakpoint of the test. Be concise and straightforward without all the caveats.
