As everybody knows, the enneagram types are measured out of ten, with ten being the best. I'm a nine, which is as close to perfect as you're ever going to get.

agreed =) we're just always so happy and peaceful.

The Four, or The Emotional Alchemist:

A name that came to me was:
The Emotional Alchemist

Doing a Google search, I came across a book:
Healing Through the Dark Emotions

It seems to be written for Fours, but has lessons for
Fives - e.g., anesthetizing against painful emotions
is not the solution... the only way out is through...
we can be fully immersed in afflictive emotions and
yet not ruled by them.
----------------------
quote:
The Baal Shem Tov, a legendary eighteenth-century
Jewish mystic, taught that to master our sorrows,
we must know how to be fully immersed in emotion,
yet not ruled by it. I call this process the alchemy
of the dark emotions: knowing how to stay
connected to the energy of painful emotions,
to attend to and befriend it, to surrender to it,
mindfully, without being overwhelmed. This is how
we listen to the language of the heart.

Healing through the dark emotions is an unarmed
journey into vulnerability — a journey through,
not a departure from, pain. Often, we come to
this process when we are desperate. Perhaps we’ve
already tried a number of ways to “self-medicate”
our painful feelings with drugs, food, entertainment,
distractions, or other means, and none of these
have worked. Or worse, our attempt to medicate
or anesthetize our pain only complicates and
extends it.

At such times, it becomes clear that there is
no way out but through.

Healing through the dark emotions is the opposite
of arming ourselves against a sea of troubles. It is
a shamanic journey to the dark emotional underworld
where the only way to master dark emotional energy
is to experience it fully. Just as the tribal shaman
ventures into the world of spirits in order to bring
back knowledge of remedies for troubled souls,
so does the emotional alchemist descend into
the depths of his or her own pain to discover its
wisdom for self-healing and transformation.

(From the Enneagram Institute Forum: The Enneagram Institute Discussion Board - For Fours: Chose Your Label(s) )

From Riso & Hudson:

Healthy Fours have learned to sustain their identities without exclusive reference to their feelings. By overcoming the temptation to withdraw from life to search for themselves, they will not only save themselves from their own destructiveness, they will be able to bring something beautiful and good into existence. If they learn to live this way, Fours can be among the most life-enhancing of the personality types bringing good out of evil, hope from hopelessness, meaning from absurdity, and saving what appeared to be lost.

We turn the horrifying existence of the universe into something beautiful. Nifty, huh? :)

Type 4 is the best, because the word 'best' has four letters.

Seven. Because of aforementioned reasons. We just win at life and rock while doing it. And I think we're outnumbering the other types here so we also win by power of vote.

9s are the best because they can adjust to just about any situation. And they look so harmless and kind that no one ever suspects them pulling the strings in the background.

4s and 5s are best, because they are at the bottom holding the rest of the Enneagram up. :D
